there is literally no way to brick a switch, just make a backup.
getting banned is easier, but now that incognito exists you can literally run it on your emunand and never risk, it removes your unique system information from the OS.

Which guide is even the most up to date? /hbg/ has two guides, one that's a year old and one a few days old that's just a bunch of links to homebrew stuff with no actual guide.

You can get banned BUT its in "waves" as in sometimes Ninty wakes up and bans pirates.
You can brick your console if you dont follow instructions, which is why the guides tell you to make a back up while hacking it, but desu thats just a stretch as really the only thing youre actually putting your hacks in is on the SD Card. The only thing that may happen may be if: You select "Auto RCM on the atmosphere/ReiNX/SXOS and turn it on. Making the system find the .bin file necessary to boot up with either inside the Switch (sd card) or a PC. Which makes the "Brick" a "You forgot to inject the payload, use a pc or your phone, ass"

You can now warmboot directly from your SD card. Don't know about other cfw but the last reinx update finally allowed me to restart my switch in cfw without having to plug it in into my fucking phone or PC to inject the payload, and it's great.

Nintendo still doesn't allow you to locally back up saves, their cloud backup only works for SOME games and it costs a subscription.
Also Nintendo hasn't released virtual console titles, meaning while you can play all manner of GBA, SNES, N64, PS1, DOS games on Switch with CFW, you only get a few NES games with a subscription if you go legit.

If your switch ever goes for repairs, you lose your saves even if you ask them to preserve it.

From what I understand, the current firmware is hackable if you have an unpatched switch. If your switch is patched it now apparently can be hack if its on 4.1 I think

Nothing is 100% risk free, you don't know how reliable the information you're getting provided is, you don't know the error rate in the code involved in these hacks, and you can't absolutely guarantee that the people making these mods didn't miss something that in the future may get your system banned anyways.

the confusion comes from these people who haven't been paying attention confusion patched with updated.

To be clear:
patched switches are patched at the factory and sold new, it has to do with RCM (recovery) not being accessible anymore.
It has nothing to do with firmware version.

Unpatched switches are older models. They can have the newest system update, but the vulnerability is unpatched because they left the factory with it.

Patched switches require 4.1 system update or lower.
Unpatches switches can be 8.1 and future firmwares too.

I think custom themes would be nice at this point because it just seems so fucking plain. Even if they only had some minor ones to choose from, basic free themes like PS4 has, it'd feel a bit nicer.

DS emulation is literally perfect on a blackberry key1/key2. For starters you can map all the keys to the keyboard and have the touchscreen be used for its intended purpose. The cherry on top is the 3:2 LCD aspect ratio, which is exactly that of two stacked 4:3 displays as used on the DS.

I used only custom DNS for months and didn't get banned, it's a viable alternative.

The important thing is to just not connect to nintendo servers while you have NSPs installed.
If that means airplane mode, dns or incognito it doesn't matter.
Do all your NSPs and shit on emunand then your legit shit on OFW sysnand.

Nintendo hasn't got a team of CSI operatives manually looking at every person's account and building a case file on them, they have telemetry and logs that periodically send data to their servers and then they issue ban waves based on data such as "have they ever installed a fake title".
Indiscriminate ban waves are always how this shit is done, their criteria may change over time but they never want any collateral damage so it's always for obvious tell tale signs.
Same with 3DS, remember when all those people got banned for going online with the LEAKED copy of the game as an eshop title?
They knew with 100% certainty they were pirated because the eshop version wasn't out, so they could issue a ban wave to all those units.
They weren't manually looking at each of them and writing a report on the pros and cons of banning that individual.

But I restored it and played it a little bit to refresh the logs. I thought it was best to restore before Nintendo became more aggressive. Upgrading shit is easier with Switch than 3DS since you don't have a long install process.
A new version of your CFW comes out, you put the file on your SD card then if you want to update the system firmware you use the homebrew app choidujour.

automatic updates are a toggle option in your switch menu (Nintendo includes this for everyone!).
You can also use DNS to block only updates.
If you accidentally downloaded an update and it's ready to install, you turn off your console and hold the buttons for recovery mode, which clears the pending system update.
Then you boot back in like nothing happened.
You also can update manually with choidujour to catch up with system updates without burning fuses, allowing you to downgrade later and play new games online now.
OFW cannot detect CFW, emunand exists only as files on the SD card (optionally as an inaccessible partition on the SD card).

Bans come from installing eshop games you don't own basically.
Everything gets logged and sent to nintendo.
If you use a save manager in CFW you can do whatever and restore the save to your sysnand, then when you boot OFW sysnand you'll still have the updated savefile without ever running bannable shit.

From nintendo's end, they can't tell if you went online and played the game or edited the save.

it depends on the way you've set it up but basically the way it works for most people is you need to have a dongle or USB cable inserted when you boot the device or it refuses to boot (for safety, avoids normalfags fucking it up on accident).
If you hold volume while booting you'll get into a menu that lets you choose whether to boot CFW emunand, CFW sysnand or OFW sysnand.
CFW sysnand and OFW sysnand are the same underlying OS with the same data, so when you change the save files with CFW it will be preserved in OFW.

I have two switches, one is vulnerable to fusee gelee and modded, the other one is new and so far I've only used it for splatoon and tetris99. It appears that patched units are only vulnerable on some ancient 4.x firmware. I think I'll just emunand my modded switch and never use the other one again and hopefully some other exploit for recent fws will be found at some point.

Anyway, since I've used my modded switch for years now, how do you guys dealt with converting it to emunand? Can you just take a full dump of your cfw nand and then restore the original nand backup you took first thing before modding?

I don't know how the free version of emunand works but SXOS just copies your sysnand that you currently have.
I'd recommend restoring your clean nand backup to your sysnand before you go online though.

Don't think I'll ever bother with this. I refuse to pay for online and the only game I'd probably use online would be MM2 but even then you can still get levels without online anyway.

If you do this inside of emunand, the emunand is a blank slate, it can't connect online and nintendo has no idea of what the fuck console it is.
And when you're switched to your sysnand the emunand is just random files on the sd card, no different to if Johnny stored his book report on it.
