Sameface Sage is for normies. It's popular, which means it gains traction, and people assume it must be the best to get that much chatter. It's not. Not at all. It's actually really fucking terrible.

For indie, I'd recommend Superpowered. The amount of depth in that game would blow your mind. It doesn't look like it from the front, but the amount of forking possibilities is insanely ambitious. Plus they don't shy away from eubophilia, incest, rape, etc. It can get really dark but also really funny.

For pro, Kamidory Alchemy Meister. Come for the tits, stay for the gameplay that puts most RPGs to shame.

Generally, yes. Very few of them use custom assets and creative design. It's safe to assume they're all shit that would have been better in Renpy. I can only think of one that was pretty good - The Last Sovereign - but you really can't go wrong with a serious game with a party member named Qum D'umpe.
