How do I get into the Resident Evil series?

RE: 4, plain and simple

Optimal Play Order:
2 > 3 > REmake > 4 > 1 > 0 > 5 > Rev 2 > 7 > Outbreak > Gaiden > 6 > CV
Rev 1 and REmake 2 can be skipped

What do you want to play? You can almost start with any of them.
2 remake or 7 is probably the scariest
1 is you want an old school game
4 if you want more action

Do that. Play REmake and Zero. Every one of us will tell you what to play based on personal preference and nostalgia, but if you play the more accesible entries of the pre-rendered RE games, you'll know what to expect of the classics.
But play RE4, man. Anyone that remotely likes vidya should play that one.

remember to play REmake first, tho.

I had always been interested in RE4, especially after I got into DMC, but I was also put off from playing it cause I thought it might be scary.
I know that you get to choose whether to play as between Jill or another guy. Is there any difference? I always thought Jill was the only playable character.

Emulate the PS1 games. Buy REmake HD, 0 HD, 7, and REmake 2.
Jill is easier than Chris. She gets more inventory space and a few events that make things easier for her.

Good cliffnotes way to get into the series but the older games are worth playing.
