Now a fandom/community thing, but I feel when games start getting too many unfitting skins that don't match the visual style of the game, that's the beginning of the end. I can't play any modern game now where I don't see people that look like clowns that bring down the initial solid artstyle of those games.
Plus, it denotes that the focus has switched from making a fun game to making skins that paypigs are willing to buy and collect.

I think every game I've played with people is hilarious whenever you're all new and trying new things, and becomes complete shit when everyone is focused on just doing the full meta shit

The industry moving to one queue for matchmaking instead of dedicated servers helped push this shit too, it used to be all the tryhards and competitive players could play on their own servers while all the trolls would be on another one and all the children would be on another. Now they're all put in together and no one is happy.

When people outside the game influence game development and the creator tries to appeal those people because "expanding the market". Like if a person like me, being a complete imbecile in racing games, complains about the game being too hard (because I can't admit my own limitations or my dislike for certain genres) and how it should be more noob-friendly for people like me. The devs then, believing the core audience will buy the game regardless, makes the games easier for my kind hoping to increase the playerbase.

In the 90s you still had a ton of platformers, puzzle games, point and click adventures. Not everything was Duke Nukem and Mortal Kombat.
