Reminder that pressing down while holding a Buzzy Shell equips it.
The shell when equipped has a huge hitbox especially on small Mario, a lot of times it's better to duck and block a fireball/bullet bill with your shell instead of trying to jump over it.

Does anyone know how the item limit works now?
It used to be that if you loaded in 98 power ups on rails and put 2 1ups on rails, you could use the 1ups as a kind of currency for shops by using the item limit mechanics. That doesn't seem to be the case anymore though.

Just finished a new level where Mario journeys to space to find worms and wizards bar his way. Any feedback appreciated, particularly if the level would be better with a clear condition of either coins or killing enemies rather than keeping the checkpoint.

so how exactly do I get the screen to lock in place for blocked off areas? I know it's supposed to be completely closed off but I don't get the how or why of it.
The line of blocks or ground need to extend to the entire width or height of the stage
Make a wall using blocks that goes from very top to bottom of the available space.
Note that the area still needs to be big enough that it covers 1 entire screen or it won't work, It also doesn't always work iwhen you're testing, play the level from the start to make sure.
WRd. Was fun to sequence break. The firebro and the clear pipes is a good idea that can be expanded upon, but I'm not a big fan of the fake exit.
The key is needlessly placed in a cramped spot. Could just be above the pipe.

After numerous attempts, I think I finally made a normal stage that isnt completely awful. Uses half jungle, half underground in smb3. If anyone plays it, is the later half too much of a difficulty jump?

Liked all the little secret coins and 1 ups, and the thwomp ride. last section with the 2 thwomps could use a slightly higher teleport to make them a little more visible. Not much else to say aside from maybe making clear pipes more involved? 3d world style isnt very visually appealing either, but could be just me
The biggest challenge was waiting a little in the beginning after dropping into the bully part, because if you just spammed longjump from the start you ended up in the single square of lava.
Feels pretty unfair. It feels like a puzzle you either know the answer to or not, because if you know to just spam long jump, it's fairly easy.
If you put a muncher stack at the end and POWs you have to hit to clear it, so that you have to alternate longjumps and hitting POWs, that could be interesting. I guess that would kill the Boom Boom, though...

So what's the mechanical difference between 3DW and NSMB? They seem the same, as far as I can tell it's just being able to glide instead of twirl, and of course the cat suit.

What are some good ways to incorporate secrets and reward the player for finding extras? People hand out 1-UPs like candy, even though they aren't always worth anything. I've been hiding 50-coins and 1-ups in certain places, as well as some powerups. But it all seems to not matter too much compared to proper secrets in a real mario game.

It requires to many precise jumps with a platform that isn't consistent (the back of enemies). With the auto scroll, you made a level that overwhelms a play, and doesn't afford a challenge that feels fair

I put a lot of work on this one. It represents 3x3x3 cube with 27 rooms. I tried to come up with puzzles and challenges for each room using smb3 mechanics. I designed it so that it would be linear experience even though the level loops on itself. There are 2 checkpoints and it's pretty long. You can only finish it in time without dying if you know what you are doing. Yeah it seems that the stages are stuck at 0/0 until i get to share them with my friend. Having fun with the game anyway.

Succeeded at making me feel dumb. The rhythm is simple once you die, but I was expecting more level afterward. I'd like this section as part of a sub-level or something, but it seems too short by itself
The timing block part is absolute shit, and I fucking hate having to sit and wait for your troll tower to disappear every time I replay it. Wall-jumping is my favorite mechanic, so I really wanted to like this level, but you need to structure your difficult parts better.
Looking for someone to take the time to autisticly try my autoscroller course. No gets just good jumping.

Not bad, I like the floating block section that was fun, but I think putting a checkpoint flag there is a bit annoying to respawn to. The underground zone was great but I wanted to see more, kind just zipped through it. Had a good theme and art direction. Last part of the level was good too. Only think I feel to be weak is the first section; feels a bit of a jumble of ideas. Enjoyed playing it.
Awesome! I was going to talk shit about autoscrolling, but it works well. Took me longer than I want to admit to figure out that the fire flower is bait.

Just for fun I replayed it and tried the door. Good trick. I did notice that if you have the key and you take the flagpole, you'll open up the door on the castle. Is that new in MM2?
Yeah, I figured. It's still a short level, but I guess that's just the nature of autoscrollers to feel slow. I set the speed at Normal for the level, as Fast was way too fast for the pace of the level. The level was mostly for practice more than anything anyways.

Because i suspect you have to have a platform to post them; or they'll get buried; it's just like the first page of Yea Forums.
Far left and far right side of the room are safe especially when crouching with the shell. The room's so small you always have enough time on your iframes to make it back to the Buzzy Shell spawner if you get hit from wherever you are in the room. Just make sure there's no bullet bills near the ground and use that to jump between the sides of the room.
It's not meant to be specific characters, I just went with what could seem cool in Mario Maker.

Damn, Super Ball Temple was one of my favorites up until the "boss" room. It went from fast, clever puzzles to tedium ultra quick, and didn't even have the kino SML music anymore. I'd recommend reducing the switch blocks on the right side. The ball doesn't last long enough to even give yourself one extra bounce, you have to have perfect timing.

Nice, meowser is a bitch and I didn't realize there was no way to hurt him. He's like in the foreground. I assume the secret exit is somewhere in the water area. I missed it. Also the clear condition didn't really matter

Nice jumping sections, you did a good job balancing the way the player has to wait before jumping because of autoscroll. Most people make these too tight. Bunch of pointless pipes after the door, though. I'm guessing you did this because pipes can only lead to the sub-level.

Really visually appealing, bit short though. The vine block in SMW tile set looks good. Bitch ass giant magikoopa died in only one fireball. I think I saw some secrets and missed them

Charvaargh can be placed anywhere at the bottom of a level, and he kind of just does his own thing at regular intervals.
The way I did it was have one of them at the right of a "room" and then a warp box leading to a room directly to the right, so I only had to use one charvaargh to get it to function the way it did.

It was going from day 1, just look at all the levels being posted here. The sooner you buy it the better.
Vine aesthetic was cool, I especially liked the vine climbing area before the first checkpoint, really clever. In the future, try to vary the vine length a bit more to make it seem more natural (like around the checkpoint).
I love the concept, reminds me of some of those old Maplestory jumpquests. Plus you used the best theme. In the future, you may consider making it even longer in order to really make a challenging level (you can market it as such)

WRed it. It's fine, pretty easy once you figure out what kind of jumps you need to make. I think you can refine the idea further for a greater variety of jumps without necessarily making it harder.

Wow, I really liked this one, user. I thought it was clever without being too difficult, I'm surprised I was the first to clear it. Structurally, it was sound. The only things I'd change might be the power-ups just lying on the ground in a few places (although I get for some they're necessary for the player to see them as goals) and aesthetic anomalies like icicles hanging in midair. Also, the "boss" is easily cheesed since you give a fire flower right before him, and he gets stuck in the space right in front of the warp block. You can just pummel him with fireballs from a safe spot.

Cool level. The second half was really clusterfucky and the one bit before that where you have to bait a wiggler to make your way up over a pit will be hit or miss with people. I'd hate to run into that in an Endless challenge because it'll be a life drainer. Fun overall

Creator of the Dig Dug one, I did enjoy the level, actually replaying it to give it a like, but i guess the only nitpick i can think of is the "loose pipes" at least design wise. Gameplay was fine, if you plan on making more of these levels I'd consider making them lengthier and putting a checkpoint. Overall it was bite-sized fun

Vine user here, appreciate the feedback. Yours was solid! You probably had more goombrats than you needed-- made the counter feel kinda pointless and misleading toward the end-- but otherwise they were utilized for some solid platforming objectives. Also, Bowser Jr. immediately respawning (in a basement, no less) is pretty jarring, but a good miniboss to break things up a bit.

Played your levels even though you forgot to anchor tard. Ice level is pretty good but I lost momentum once or twice, it might of just been me tough.
Castle is a but more mediocre-ok, when you hit the first wall and miss the platforms you get bombarded by homing bills and bones so you end up getting boned more often than not (lol). If you could find a way to point out the bone boats in the second part it would be great because I missed for a bit when i got there. I also cheesed the vertical section by jumping on the fire rod so fix if if you dont like it I guess, Also the bowser junior fight was pretty good, the lava spewers on the side where a bit much though.

The slide level isn't perfect, I whipped it up in like an hour. I'll probably fine tune it eventually, I didn't want it to be stupid pixel perfect hard.
Castle Level probably went a bit overboard on projectiles in the first section. And good point on the boats. Everything seems so obvious when you're the guy making the level. I was thinking of taking out the lava spewer on the fight anyway.

It's a good difficulty level. Took me about 10 tries. I think the problem with it is that it's not really satisfying to play. The 3DW spin bullshit is gay as fuck and feels floaty and gay, and on top of that you have to climb every tree, slowly. You could have included a few more enemies to bounce off as well, instead of just going tree-to-tree for most of it.

Some of my levels have gotten over 100 plays, while some struggle to break even 10. I believe the quality throughout all of my levels are constant, too, and sometimes the amount of plays won't even go up from 0 at all unless I tell someone to play it. What gives?

The bullet bill snake was bullshit (as was the boss area, granted I'm a SMW scrub), but otherwise I had fun climbing the tower, user. There wasn't much going on visually, some vertical jumps expect you to be an expert, there could stand to be some coins at transitions between segments and there seemed to be alot of wasted space, but otherwise the pressure to react to and execute all the ideas you had lined up felt really damn good. Definitely clean it up, it deserves it.

I'm going by my level statistics. My level style has not changed since MM1. In that game, everyone tried my levels for maybe 50 or so attempts before giving up. In this game, people literally play it 2 fucking times then give up. This is consistent across all my levels and it's not a coincidence. MM2 players are simply lower quality compared to MM1.

Infestation - W6H-0D3-VGG - took inspiration from the zombie trope where “hordes burst through and pile up”
Sand Pipe Tower - PFV-Y90-W1H - a normal difficulty vertical angry sun level
Split Paths in the Subterranean - K1Y-HXJ-22G - meant more for multiplayer but would like feedback
It doesn't work as well in mario maker since in mario run bowser was way easier to hit

you can also put them on tracks and then have them follow a custom path that way

it works by the claw swings, they drop enemies when you're below them. They're a bit more powerful than thwomps in some ways because they can then drag the dropped enemies elsewhere.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean but I can give you a little walkthrough.
You have 6 uses of the switches before the p switch triggers.
First, lower the first blue platform.
Use switch to derail the flying block. (1)
Fly across gap, use switch to pass red blocks. (2)
Activate the platform to bring the shell helmet up, but don't trigger the thwomp.
After raising the platform, let the thwomp hit the switch and quickly cross back over (3)
Go up and collect the shell.
Press the switch to access the key (4)
Press the switch to leave the key area (5)
Go back to the bottom right switch and press it while the moving block is under you (6)
This will activate the P switch, allowing you to enter the door with the key.
It's just fucked. No use caring.

Here are my levels. The stats are not up to date. No one cleared Forest Saga yet. One absolute mad man managed to beat Hard but not kaizo hard. First Craft is a re upload of a messy first draft, but is now pretty decent and fairly easy.

Took me 1 hour to upload beat. Which is without the checkpoint. Try it, it's not that hard really.
Basically every Story Mode level is full of secrets or coins placed in risky places that function sort of like NSMB star coins or red coins in Yoshi's Island but the game doesn't track them at all which makes me mad
Other than that I haven't done any of the game outside Story Mode but Story Mdoe's been really fun so far at least
I finished my first real stage, a sort of spiritual sequel to one I made in SMM1 before any updates came out.

Someone said to check out the maker tutorial. Does it ever cover anything not for mouth breathers? I've watched more than 2/3rds through and most of it you figure out by just trying to make a level like "Don't nigger your players by placing bricks in a player's expected jump arc super mario bros 2 (japan) style please"
