Shitty level creators who try to beat the player instead of making good levels will find a way to abuse whatever tools are given to them anyway. The stone in particular is such a great tool in tandem with the Seesaw seeing as it is a permanent throwable object that you can't accidentally throw away or step on like the POW and P-Switch.

Considering altering the Podoboos in the boss room, in Mario Maker 1 the winged ones would bounce at angles when they hit the floor, I have to use a parachute as well in Maker 2 or they just bounce vertically.

Its a red bullet bill gimic stage, but you can reset the room and get a mushroom each try. I think it's fair for endless mode since it's hard to die, and you can leave with 3 1-ups .

i wish there was a way to select tags for endless mode. i really hate when im on a good run and then suddenly theres some meme retarded boss battle i lose a life on and have to skip

I swear every single person has to force in the koopa car into their levels. Even if it's a nice cozy traditional level, it always gets ruined by a shitty automatic car section that just got shoehorned in. Anyways...

how long does it usually take you guys to finish a level? i'm making my second stage and thought i'd be done two days ago but every time i work on it i keep changing stuff and it takes so long i end up needing to sleep.

On the section before the red pipe it doesn't feel possible to get through without taking damage. It's also probably better to start the player so that when they rush after that pipe they don't immediately die by rising lava. The 2-high ceiling sections with spikes at the top basically make it impossible not to take damage as big mario. I kind of just gave up after the two giant fish at the end forced me to die at the last choke point.

Maybe I'm just not super good. Actually I know I'm not that great at 2d mario. Like I said, I do like your level design though, the vines going up with the thwomps was cool, and so was the part with the chain chomp.

Biggest thing I’d keep in mind is to make sure a level is satisfying to play before decorating it. I can tell you went for a deteriorating temple look but I’d say add that stuff in later, a few sections in particular were pretty cramped.

Another big thing is to make sure you use coins to guide the player towards objectives, like down into the underwater portion for example you could leave a few coins in view to make sure nobody misses it. It just looks like a pit until you jump down there, so a few coins can really help out with pointing out where to go to players.

I liked the open ended nature of the level and that there’s some branching paths to take, gives the level some freedom.

Made a level together with my niece. Had to make it pretty easy because she doesn't really know how to use the run button or grab stuff. She likes spooky stuff so it's a spooky basement level.

It seems like there’s a delay on how long it takes for your levels to show up in the queue because there’s so many levels being pumped out at once. Posting your code can help boost the level’s place in the queue supposedly, as a star or two can have a snowball effect sometimes.

How can I have a warp pipe lead to somewhere else in the main level instead of the sub-level? Right now I have a room in-between, located in the sub-level, with another set of pipes. But that's not what I want. I'm sure you can do this with doors.

i fucking love these games. on a good map and the official story mode ones it's like i'm getting a level pack / dlc for super mario world. it's great

clear pipes are the only way. i dont think you can do that otherwise. one way to get around it is to just make a sub area the same theme as above.

Here's a test level for an idea I came up with. Basically, you have to fight Boom Boom in a pushing match against a Bully. You need to use the long jump if you want any chance of pushing Boom Boom into the lava. I'll be using this idea for a bigger project later. But first I want to hear from you guys. Please tell me what you think.

There is one right before the boss, being limited to one checkpoint is really crippling. Usually I try to soften the really trickier up parts with a mushroom, but idk. Dying resets switch triggers, destroyed blocks, and keys right? Don't think I can make multiple artificial shortcuts/checkpoints with switch logic fuckery that'll stay after death.

I get what you mean. The top path that requires a boot is the "better" path, but I felt like offering a split for people who lose it. I think you have to make walls on the outside of the perimeter of the area.

A line of blocks crossing the whole stage will stop scrolling

Vertical wall of ground or hard blocks from top to bottom.
Not sure if any other block types work, I know bricks don't.

Just place walls of any kind around the edge of the screen.

As first attempts go I've seen worse, but it depends on a hodgepodge of randomly placed enemies instead of platforming. I think you'll get better as you play other stages, kinda soaking in how platforms/ground are arranged.

Good little level dude. Can easily see how someone could blast through it knowing all the timing.

Gonna be honest, it's pretty tedious. I like the use of the Super Ball, but it's slow and annoying luring the Bob-Ombs out of the pipe to blow up a hole in the side of the pyramid. I'd reduce the amount of coins needed, or maybe put all the coins in a single "treasure room" or something

i wish we had the ability to make full playable worlds.

Eh, it's alright. Some running and jumping with enemies in the way, I've definitely played worse.
Some minor dick moves in there though, like the hidden blocks above the spikes in the start and having the first shell-activated block give a mushroom but all the others being bad.

Good thematics, tight and interesting platforming, but that second half was miserable. No powerups, easy falls to your death, a long climb with extremely tight jumps and then when you finally make it out it's straight into icicle swings. Also, lose that powerup pipe on the right side and seal up the wall so that the camera is properly constrained.

Not bad, but there's very little room for improvement as far as a player goes; Most every fumble results in death.

Both levels look great, though the bottleneck at the end of Goombattle means the rest of the stage is more for show and less for actual racing.

Made another. It's a sky level where you need the cape feather to get through it. First section has banzai bills and a shortcut. Second section is optional, and has an angry sun in it.

Feels like it could be a bit longer, I only had to dodge spikes once before the bomb went off and twice more on the snake block, both of which were pretty easy.
That's when blazing through the start, when I picked up the 1-up the moles/spinies had time to do their thing and it became a lot harder.

Great atmosphere!

Very fun once you know the path, but requires a little trial and error which might not be favorable for endless mode players. But would be good for speed running.

Mixing chaotic vertical platforming with mazelike puzzles is a shitty mix. If you want to make puzzles, make puzzles. If you want to make combat and platforming sections, make those.

Really liked the jail one. But that drop into the unknown full of goombas and boom boom is a little cheap. Not hard but you can immediately lose the Fire flower just dropping down

how do I get the water/lava to rise and fall repeatedly? everytime I try it it just rises/falls once. I've seen it in a story level so I know it's possible. unless they're really shitting me

Cool level, the limited sight and night music fit a prison level pretty well. It's not a tedious level at all, I don't think anything requires more than a few seconds of waiting, really.

The one exception is the POW stack bit right after the first checkpoint. The way it's set up forces you to wait for the stack to pass you before you can jump in or you'll just get squished against the wall.
There's also a goomba in the fire pit that ambushes you with no real warning.

Other than those 2 minor things I loved it though

That was kinda tough. Great aesthetic. Love the maze-like quality. A mushroom would have been welcome. Consider balancing your challenges with a little mercy. The part with the switch blocks was cool, and the seasaws. Figuring out that you wanted us to (I believe) use the "overworld" koopas made me feel clever and delighted.

It's solid. The only suggestion I'd make is that if your sub level isn't going to be vertical, a different theme, or used for extra level length, don't bother using it. You don't really gain anything from it.

I also left that pipe there because I, probably foolishly, just felt like having an optional pipe to some coins and 1-ups if you happened to get there without a power up. Thanks for playing though.

Cool level design. All hell breaks loose after the checkpoint. I was able to just run past the saws and bounce off a fish to get to the goal. I would prevent that, and force the vine ride as the only option. But make the vine ride a little easier, you get shit on as soon as you touch the vine, but I like the idea of riding it forward while the fireballs slowly follow.

Nah, it's not great, but I appreciate the attempt. I liked trying to guess which enemies were which enemies in the Kirby game, and the use of Boom Boom as a Kirby-style boss.

Looking at the death areas, it was that part after the fire flower where it looks like the most trouble. But you can try to throw the shell multiple times. As long as you don't kill the koopa, you can run back and he'll respawn.

I havent finished the first one yet, i can kill the boom boom thats not the problem. But when your trying to push the bully you will always fall into the pit.

Blind jump of faith right at the start, and if you don't immediately run the lava kills the turtle then you... tried the jump a couple times and coudn't make it so I quit. I think you need a much gentler ramp into what is going on

Rough in the way to throw the bomb? Or the general aesthetic? It's my second level so far that I've created and I believe it's quite a step up to my first level (which has several different cheese methods).

Here's the trick there: push the Bully back as far as possible before you hit the lava, then push him with a normal jump. There should be a little open space between him and the lava now, so just use a long jump and you can get there.

This is a solid first level. There was a little enemy spam near the end though.

They do that so you can't lock someone from beating the stage if they die after getting a checkpoint.

Fucking this. I was trying to make an underground level that started and ended on the surface only to discover that if I wanted to make any sub areas, I couldn't keep the underground theme and it fucked up the entire aesthetic.

This game is making me realize I'm better at playing Mario than I am at making it.

You know what? I'd happily trade varying styles for a single really decked out style.

It shouldn't die the first time you enter the room. The other times it should as to prevent you to throw the bomb at the key then at the question block. The goal was to hit both with one explosion. Or are you saying that sometimes on a fresh restart the bomb will die the very first time you enter the door?

You can't use the stones or the toads from story mode, they aren't available in the toolset.

Tough level but you were pretty generous with checkpoints and 1ups. Really liked it!

Only 1 part I'd say is unfair/frustrating is the bobomb that drops down after the conveyer belt right under a checkpoint after the lava portion. Bastard got me like 3 times since I couldnt see where he came from.

Having to blow up row after row of things gets boring since you gotta wait after each one, when I died and respawned all the way back I lost the will to go on :-(

The second section maybe didnt need to have that many layers there, no real challenge there once the novelty wears off
The third layer felt a bit cheap since I didnt know there were more blocks down there, went down, then back up and got killed by a bomb blocking the entrance

Its how red pow blocks work, they have an AOE of about 4-5 blocks radius that triggers/breaks all neighboring blocks and also triggers other red pow blocks.

I'm a big fan of the concept of in-level tutorials, I also tried to do it with the skipsqueaks at the start.

I'm tired of using the joy-cons and the only other controllers I have are GameCube controllers.
I'm on the fence on either getting a Switch Pro Controller or the 8Bitdo SN30 Pro.
Has anybody been using either for this game? How do they stack up against each other? Which should I get?

P.S. Arguments about me using the pro controller for other games are moot since I only play Smash Bros. and Mario Maker, I don't plan on buying any other switch games, I have a PC for indies and had a Wii U.

This is basically just part of good level design. Have a consistent theme/challenge, and introduce it in a low-stakes environment before doing it in a setting where there are (serious) consequences. Almost all Mario stages do this, as well as similar games like Mega Man.

Cool level! I'd replace the fire flower halfway through with a raccoon leaf (It's awkward to get if you're Super Mario and most of the enemies going forward aren't affected by fire) but other than that I enjoyed it!
