What's the best version of Rayman 2?

I never played this game growing up but I've heard really good things, so I finally wanna give it a good shot soon. That said, there's a ton of different versions and it's hard to find a consensus. Which should I look into, Yea Forums?

I played the PC version as a kid and as far as I remember it worked fine

The Dreamcast version is the best.

May I ask what specifically made that version superior to the others? I've also heard good things about Revolution like the extra content, but apparently that one also runs a bit worse.

It's also probably worth adding that I'd /prefer/ to play on PC, but likely through emulation. (I do have access to a Dreamcast if that version doesn't emulate that great though).
I'm wary about playing the PC port as a lot of games from that time tend to be a pretty finicky experience on modern PCs (having to use wonky wrappers, jumping through hoops for decent controller support, etc,).

Dreamcast had a slight facelift but it's largely the same game. You can try emulating it or just play the PC version. I wouldn't play the PS2 version first.

P S 2
S

IGNORE ALL DREAMKEKS

N64 version was the original development platform and so has the most SOUL

>original version
N64/PC
>most content
PS2
>best overall
Probably Dreamcast.

>>most content
>PS2
So PS2 is the best.

More doesn't always mean better, especially when other aspects of the game suffer.

Like?
Framerate is fixed with emulation

It and 3ds port of it are the only ones that runs 60fps. Ps2/revolution adds hub area and some other shit but it runs like ass and the new stuff feels tackled on and unnecessary. N64 and pc versions are good too but they are 30fps. Avoid ps1 and ds versions.

>tackled on and unnecessary
Meaningless buzzwords.
Open hubs > Level select menu

Oh wow, definitely gonna attempt to emulate the Dreamcast version before trying anything else then. I can handle 30fps fine but if 60 is available, that's definitely preferable. Performance is more important to me than extra content if it isn't that substantial. Also apparently the PS2 version has voice acting?? Not sure how I feel about that.

if you like and or want to play Rayman 3 as well the voice acting actually works better

but yeah I preferred the gibberish

Dreamcast is best.

The n64 port is also good.

Don't play the ps1 port, it's atrocious.

The idea of adding voice acting to a game that originally didn't have any just kinda rubs me the wrong way, yknow?
I'll definitely give 3 a shot if I enjoy 2 and want more.

PC, dreamcast worldmap is soulless

Rad. I'm thinking N64 will be my fallback if the Dreamcast version emulates like ass and the setting up PC port proves too much of a hassle.
What did the PS1 version fuck up?

>3ds port
Will check out.

Pc is 60fps

The 3DS port didn't maintain 60 from my recollection. It's a port of the Dreamcast version, but the framerate is closer to Rayman 64, it's basically a halfway point between the N64 and DC version.

You can Emulate the PS2 version in 60 fps with a pnatch. Also you can turn on gibberish in the options.

Can some one explain to me how the Dreamcast version is better than the PC?
I know the differences in the PS2.
But the only differences between the Dreamcast and PC, seems to be Dreamcast having an uglier
Hall of Doors.

N64 version, the over world in the ps2 version was pointless and oversized.

Seconding this

>What did the PS1 version fuck up?
The levels are truncated because the PS1 can't handle an open 3D world very well

I played the Dreamcast version and it was fantastic. Basically a straight upgrade on the N64 version.
I think the PC version is pretty much the same but I haven't tried it.
The PS1 version is kinda shit.
The PS2 version has some upgrades and some downgrades, it's overall worth checking out.
Avoid the DS and 3DS versions unless you're overclocking.

>because the PS1 can't handle an open 3D world very well
Well, Spyro seemed to handle that just fine. With all three games infact.

Spyro needed a specially built engine that drops all textures past a certain distance

sonic adventure.

No control issues

Smoother framerate, no load times

Extra content

Why couldn't Ubisoft just re-release the first 3 games on Steam and current consoles? I lost my Rayman 2 PC disc years ago and I refuse to buy it on the Ubisoft store.

Attached: hqdefault (4).jpg (480x360, 14K)

Fucking spot on, listen to this man.

I've 100% every port of the game, and this guy is completely right.

On a side note, why the hell isn't there an HD port of Rayman 2 yet?

insomniac are fucking wizards, did you see the ratchet & clank games? spyro is the only game on the playstation I can think of that can stand up to the n64 in terms of collectathon open worlds

Dreamcast version is the best, it had better models than the pc version of I recall correctly. Same thing for soul reaver and a lot of other multiplats. The ps2 version has worse loading times and "better" textures but really they are ugly as shit. They also replaced the gibberish with actual voice acting which really kills the overall style. The ps2 version is the soulless one or of the bunch.

>I lost my Rayman 2 PC disc years ago and I refuse to buy it on the Ubisoft store.
Just pirate it.

>I've 100% every port of the game
Hows the 3DS version?

They're on GoG

runs like shit, if you have a hacked n3ds then it's better. then it's a decent port of the dreamcast version.

Sounds good. I'll be playing the original version on Monday, but having an alternative is nice.

3ds or ps2

BEDOO

>Extra content
But what extra content?

I am in the same situation pretty much, if I were to say order the original disk for the PC version for Ray 2 off amazon does it run on Windows 10? Also off topic but like if Ancel wants to make a broken online moba thing like every other western dev fine but ubi could at least make the original trilogy available on modern systems.

These Rayman 2 renders are made with soul

Attached: rayman 2.jpg (584x764, 53K)

>The ps2 version is the soulless one or of the bunch
The hubs alone already make this statement untrue.

Expanded levels, a mini game and extra pirates not present in previous versions.

Rayman 2 PC runs pretty poorly on modern PCs. It also has virtually no controller support.

Fucking Brawlhalla made a more soulful Rayman design than Origins/Legends.

This. The one thing I didn't like about the Ubi-art games is that they turned Rayman into a crazy buffoon who's crazy on drugs. It's kinda of a odd retcon because I always saw Rayman as a chill, smooth and heroic protagonist.

>does it run on Windows 10?
gog version runs it with Nglide, so use that or download dgvoodoo and it should be fine.
Use pcgw for widescreen and controller support.
when it comes to framerate, you can use whichever fps you want, it will only brake a minigame which is optional

Delete that shit

Attached: DmlxKkRUUAIrG0e.jpg (586x582, 44K)

Thanks raybro! Does everything you said apply to only the gog version or could it be for disk ver as well?

Absolute madman. How did he do it?

the gog version has the advantage of removing the on-disc drm (which can cause issues on modern PCs) and making the installer work on 64bit systems.
that said, all of this can be fixed if you go through this page
>pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Rayman_2:_The_Great_Escape
the ray2 community has basically preserved the game so that it can run even from a retail disc

>All the people shitting on the PS2 version
Hurts my soul.

N64: the original
PC: N64 version with better audio and high-res support
PS2: has the most content and the best graphics, but the framerate is a little choppy
PS1: it's the only port that has the original 2D beta version of Rayman 2, besides that it's shit, the game's been chopped in half and there's no gibberish option
DS: port of the N64 version with terrible touchscreen controls
3DS: port of the Dreamcast version, IIRC it's impossible to 100% this version due to a bunch of bugs

OP is never actually gonna play the game. We all thank you though:)

Shame, it's really good

I only played on n64, apparently the ps2 version had voice acting in English. I feel like that's a detractor

Who else here cant stand the soundtrack if its not the n64 og shitty midis? I mean dc soundtrack is good but its just not the same.

The PS2 version is my favorite, though it’s probably the most “different” version of the game.

My man

I cant be the only one who like the VA in Revolution, at the very least it stays consistent With Rayman 3, well barring John Leguizamos Globox.

Attached: 1539724032965.png (354x574, 161K)

I played the PS3 Store version of PS2 Rayman 2 and I didn’t notice any frame drops at all, which version did you play?

You can choose gibberish

Huh, neat. Still, who in their right mind wouldn't choose gibberish

Original PAL PS2 version. Its frame rate isn't as good as the Dreamcast version's, which is a solid 60fps.

Not him, but I think the gibbereish sounds awful, It's fine in something like Banjo Kazooie. But in Rayman 2 It's the same repetitive lines that sounds like something out of The Sims.

Like with most 3ds games, turn off the 3d for an FPS boost.

if you play it on hacked new 3ds and force it to run it overclocked then its quite stable 60fps even in 3D, on old 3ds its not as stable and there definitely are some places where framerate gets choppy, but its not unplayable.

is it really? Last time someone claimed its 30fps. does it run on win7?

>best level has best theme in the game

I'm not the only one here who was scared shitless by this song, right?

>3DS: port of the Dreamcast version, IIRC it's impossible to 100% this version due to a bunch of bugs
its due to one bouncy surface not being bouncy, so there is one lum thats impossible to grab, well almost, you can damage-boost there but its tricky.
>DS: port of the N64 version with terrible touchscreen controls
And it runs literally 5-10fps, its unplayable.

The load times are ass and the optimization is poor. More is isn't always better.

> actually enjoyed the ps1 version
First time I ever played a game with cursing in it.

How has no one mentioned the best version?

Attached: Rayman+2+-+The+Great+Escape+(USA)+(En,Fr,De,Es,It)-image.jpg (400x397, 105K)

True story I had to put Rayman 2 down for a year or so because I couldn't beat this stage. Had no idea you had to eat his bubbles.

Attached: rayman-2-the-great-escape_1 (1).jpg (480x320, 60K)

>Underwater level
>Air meter
>Bubbles
Kinda obvious, but how old were you? Some things I couldn't do as a kid was easy to figure out as an adult (Gex's flying kick for example).

I was very young. The only games I played at the time with water mechanics were super mario world and donkey kong country. Two games that didn't have air mechanics.

The PS1 version was even worse, because there was a whole level for that underwater section. Meanwhile in the original version it lasted like 2 minutes.

The sad part is the game was originally going to have an actual story to explain how Rayman came to be. I'm 99% certain the dumb antics angle was supposed to be because Rayman was literally just born so of course he'd be an idiot. But since Ubisoft probably told Ancel to hurry the fuck up or its going in the trash, they just changed it to Rayman is just dumb and zainy. It makes me super sad that we will never ever get to see this fully realized.

Fuck you retard.
The PS2 version is the worst.
That HUB is fucking pointless , devoid of anything meaningful and the game was so bad it corrupted my Memory Card and made me lose all my data.

But that's not the precipice

seething

PS2 is the best.
Open World Hub filled with SOUL, Comfyness onpar with Spyro 2 hubs, and connects seamlessly with the Levels.
Upgrade Shop where you can use lums as currency
You can get the 1000th Lum.
Extra Bosses, including an actual boss for the 4th mask
Lum Magnet
More Places to Fly over Lava
More character interactions in the Hub, e.g Clark saving your ass, before he gets sick
Optional Voice acting
Motherfucking Zombie Pirates
Bonus Two player Minigames

Downsides:
Longer loading times (fixed with Emulation)
30 Fps (fixed with Emulation and a pnatch file)
