Gamer culture has really taken a toll. People who play overwatch and Pokemon go now claim to love video games when that's literally all they play. And these companies do so much business that the casuals are getting catered to more and more often. I mean just look at how much people whine about difficulty in games like fucking Cuphead. Gaming did not start as a niche hobby for enthusiasts. It was mainstream right from the get go. Arcades were for "normies", not "nerds". Home video consoles were marketed as "normie" family entertainment right from the start, not "nerds only, normies get out" toys like you think. Arguably the home computer platform was a "nerd" gaming machine because the barrier for entry was relatively high but consoles have NEVER been exclusively for the nerd enthusiasts.
