Why are Pokemon fans the only ones who get upset and whine about """pandering""" when classic characters are reused?
Why are Pokemon fans the only ones who get upset and whine about """pandering""" when classic characters are reused?
/vp/ are the last people I would call Pokemon fans
Pokemon has a lot of creatures but a lot of content is focused on a specific part of the franchise that gets preferential treatment. It eventually gets old if you’re particularly into the IP.
Rent free
>only ones
wut?
Sonic fans love when classic Sonic used over the modern design though.
Classic Sonic was hated in Forces because his gameplay was shit.
I love seeing Charizard
Classic sonic had no fucking place in forces, in terms of gameplay, plot, or anything. Only there so that classic sonic's mug can be slapped on the game
three reasons:
firstly, pokemon is about the creatures, and it's annoying to see a select few shilled and catered to above the rest.
secondly, game freak uses nostalgia pandering as a substitute for quality new content and an excuse to cut corners on the games.
finally, the nostalgia pandering is a response to fake "fans" who dropped pokemon as soon as pokemania ended, hopped back on the bandwagon as soon as '90s nostalgia became a fad, and couldn't come to terms with the fact that the series had moved on without them. the real fans who kept supporting the franchise when it wasn't trendy have come to resent how game freak panders to the fake "fans" instead of them.
Every pokemon 'fan' I have met hasn't played any iteration of the game in years, except maybe pokemon go. Why is this?
idk if this counts as pandering, but Mario RPGs after M&L Dream team replace every fucking character with toads.
>secondly, game freak uses nostalgia pandering as a substitute for quality new content and an excuse to cut corners on the games.
nothing to do with kanto
>finally, the nostalgia pandering is a response to fake "fans" who dropped pokemon as soon as pokemania ended
nothing to do with kanto
Classic Sonic is only welcome when it's a 2D Sonic game or at least when it makes sense.
>meanwhile lucario gets forced into the spotlight for the umpteenth time and no one bats an eye
It really is just a zoomer problem.
>Sonic fans love when classic Sonic used over the modern design though.
Only in 2011 or the actually good games/material. Everyone hated when it happened in Forces.
It's not just about the Pokémon themselves. Even the region itself is constantly getting referenced, remade, recycled, referenced, literally copied, referenced, literally copied, referenced and referenced more. This has been CONSTANTLY happening since XY.
Generations is a 3D game and he was welcome there. The only reason he was bad in Forces was because they fucked up the Classic stages.
Literally only happened like 3 times at best in the past 6 years.
Game lost its soul after gen 5
2*
Not true. It was welcome in Generations because it was new and unexpected. When they did it again in Forces, nobody liked it. Right from the very first teaser, everyone was complaining about Classic Sonic.
lucario pandering is nothing compared to kanto pandering.
Generations was all about Sonic's past. So he's appropriate there. Classic sonic has no business being in forces, even if his stages were alright.
Generations was a game about celebrating Sonic’s history, and adding Classic Sonic was a fresh idea that made sense with the game’s heavy time story elements.
Kanto/Jhoto pandering is made for you guys.
I like when I get both classic and new stuff. That's why the Eevee family is the best.
>pokemania happened during gen 1
>nothing to do with kanto
user please, dont make yourself look too retarded
Classic Sonic made sense in Generations because it was meant to cater all types of fans due to the 20th anniversary or something, hence the name, don't act retarded, user.
It was the first time they pulled that. SEGA saying "DO YOU REMEMBER CLASSIC SONIC??" is already pointless and boring after the third time.
Also, by 3D I meant the Boost Mechanic.
I think it has to do with the autism concentration of a fanbase. The issue only seems particularly high with sonic and pokemon fans, notoriously the most autistic bastards in gaming by far.
Every other fanbase and normal person loves seeing cool callbacks, references and staples.
Because if your series focuses on a variety of different characters but you incessantly reuse the same ones, it's a poor job using the materials you have to good effect. Similarly, other franchises get fatigued if certain characters are forced for every entry in the series as well.
The games are expensive and require hardware not everyone has. Would you pay $60 for pokemon + $200 for a switch when you could spend $260 on computer games instead?
Some fans still play. Mostly the ones who aren't whining about the series losing it's soul, furfags, and waifufags. I mean, have you seen the Alola cast? Even the professor is husbando bait. Pic related.
>what is Sonic
>what is Final Fantasy
>what is almost every reboot ever
>When they did it again in Forces, nobody liked it
Because the gameplay was shit.
>Classic sonic has no business being in forces
He was transported from Sonic Mania.
>and adding Classic Sonic was a fresh idea
Doesn't mean he can't be good in other games if they make his gameplay good.
>purugly is one of my favorite pokemon
>GF goes to the point of never including it in another game outside of Pearl
>Magcargo is another favorite pokemon
>it was one of many shit jhoto mons and because its so unpopular will likely never see a buff that makes it even slightly usable
GF knows how to hurt me
Wispy Woods is a joke/tradition.
When Sonic does green hill but with a slight variation for the 7th time sporadically, it comes across as very lazy.
Stuff like the Greenhill remake in SA2 was endearing. Stuff like green hill in forces was unoriginal.
The problem is that is always the same 3 pokemon of gen 1, why doesn't Alakazam get more attention? Or Nidoking? Or Golduck?
You completely missed the point of all the posts you replied to.
>Classic Sonic made sense in Generations because it was meant to cater all types of fans due to the 20th anniversary
You could say the same for Forces and the 25th anniversary. Don't act retarded, user.
>SEGA saying "DO YOU REMEMBER CLASSIC SONIC??" is already pointless and boring after the third time.
No i didn't.
this
You're just retard
Where's Lucario in Let's Go, Pikachu and Let's Go, Eevee?
Where's Lucario in Mewtwo Strikes Back EVOLUTION?
>game freak wastes a year worth of resources releasing the shittiest game in the series to pander to hoennfags
>somehow all the blame is still on kanto even though most ""kanto pandering"" is harmless references that don't affect the quality of the game
Uh huh.
Where's Mewtwo in Pokemon the Movie: I Choose You?
> why doesn't Alakazam get more attention?
It does that piece of shit got a fucking mega evolution.
And its because the three pokemon are the basically the mascots of the series. It's like complaining about Mario games focusing on Mario and goombas and koopas instead off whatever random enemy from whatever the fuck.
>there are more sinnoh pokemon on this poster than kanto pokemon
yeah kanto is totally the only region that gets pandered to guys
>You could say the same for Forces and the 25th anniversary. Don't act retarded, user.
Sonic Forces is clearly a Boost Sonic.
>3max.jpg
Sonic Mania is supposed to be a Classic Sonic game so it makes sense being there. Thanks for proving my point, I guess?
Where's Charizard on the Pokken boxart?
>Sonic Forces is clearly a Boost Sonic.
So is Generations.
>Classic Sonic is tiring, except for when he isn't!
Thanks for proving my point, I guess?
>hoenn gets a remake just like kanto and johto did
>KANTOOOOOO gets more love and attention than new regions in their own games
>somehow genwunners pretend this is the same thing
based retard.
Are you going to keep it up like this? Are you 9?
And neither of those are on the same level as the Kanto remakes I have mentioned. Those two are 100% Kanto. Sinnoh, or any other region, has nothing like that.
right next to pikachu.
Name 5 other companies that get away with as much incompetence as Gamefreak
I can't even name one.
False equivalence, lower form of life.
What a subtle way to tell those who choose Blastoise or Venusaur to go fuck themselves.
>"Kanto is pandered to so hard guys it physically pains me"
>"Looker physically appearing in nearly every fucking game since his debut though nah totally not pandering or ridiculous in any way"
Retards complaining about "kanto pandering" is just stupid. I wish fucking Blue or Brock would actually appear as character every single game.
And wew lets not get started on cynthia. A villa in Unova? She was even shoehorned into HGSS!
People who complain about kanto really are just fucking kids salty they dont get even more lucario stuffed in their faces and have to sometimes see stuff from before they were born.
An international police agent appearing in every region makes a hell of a lot more sense than a forest having the exact same layout as a different forest.
Not an argument, you fucking idiot. I'd wait for you to actually come up with one, but I wouldn't want to spend my live entire waiting on an impossibility.
They're kids who grew up with newer generations and resent the fact that Gen I had an unparalleled popularity.
>I wish fucking Blue would actually appear every single game.
In the last 10 years, that character
Appeared in HGSS, B2W2, SM, USUM, LGPE.
Didn't appear in BW, XY and ORAS. 3 games out of 8.
I legit feel bad for people who were too young for Gen 1. Nothing will ever compare to just how comfy it was to have everyone interested in the same thing. No other fad has come close.Felt like you could start a conversation with any kid and become friends. Relatively low paywall for all the various was to experience the series so any kid could get into it
Because in a game about using new interesting creatures, it's boring to see them just reusing the old ones. The people who don't care and like it aren't even fans and complain about the new ones.
I am constantly 3000% mad that out of all the SEVEN different Mega Man franchises, only classic gets any spotlight these days
i grew up with gen 1 and still despise the pandering. i don't do the whole "nostalgia" thing. gen 1 is boring-ass shit, always has been, and parading it 24/7 has been detrimental to the quality of the franchise.
He wasnt in the game most compalined about as far as kanto pandering goes? Hmmmmmm
HGSS and LGPE are literally remakes. And everyone appears in B2W2 in the pwt so that doesnt count.
Looker appeared in BW, XY, ORAS, SM and USUM.
Didn't appear in HGSS and LGPE. 2 games out of 8.
Cynthia appeared in BW, B2W2, SM and USUM.
She didn't appear in HGSS, XY, ORAS and LGPE. 4 games out of 8.
Imagine being an adult 'fan' of the most superficial 'tactics JRPG' ever made for children.
That sounds like the LGPE audience
KANTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Fags say this but then people get mad when you tell them they're a fucking retard for giving a shit about "playing with their bros" and giving a fuck about the national dex instead of just playimg though the hame using the pokemon of the region like any normal fucking person has been doing anyway for the past 20 years.
They aren't good no gen 1 Pokemon is usable in modern battles.
Especially Charizard who is usually killed the turn hes sent out.
So essentially this guy is mad that Lucario got some kind of attention that isn't even on par with Lapras (let alone THE Charizard) and wants people to get mad at it like they get mad at stuff like Santalune Forest? Lmao.
Trades. Replayability.
the people who say this are the same idiots who threw a temper tantrum when bw relegated all the old mons to the postgame. can't have it both ways.
never mind the fact that swsh isn't focused on the new pokemon at all, they've been blatantly shilling KANTOOOOOOO and LUCARIOOOOOOO in every trailer.
>the people who say this are the same idiots who threw a temper tantrum when bw relegated all the old mons to the postgame. can't have it both ways.
Not true at all, as that is a completely different situation.
i just like the creature-collecting dynamic. i've always been a digimon fan above all others, but i also like megaten, pokemon, yo-kai watch, etc.
Because it panders to faggots that don't play the games.
why wasn't this sonic in smash?
not really. you can't tell people to shut up and use the new pokemon after you bitched about gen 5 forcing you to use the new pokemon. at least bw still let you transfer your bros eventually.
>after you bitched about gen 5 forcing you to use the new pokemon
Why are you assuming I did?
>at least bw still let you transfer your bros eventually
Which is what everyone is asking for.
The way I see it, it's starting to turn into more of a "quantity over quality" sort of situation, where the mroe and more they add, the more and more that are forgotten and new ones are slapped up on a wall to sell for more merch.
Say you have a specific favorite from something more recent, like Gen 6's Aegislash, the rad ass ghost sword. He's not my favorite but I can see the appeal. Anyway, imagine that being your all time favorite in 800 other Pokemon. This sword gets literally no individuality between the rest of the new ones because he's a commercialized piece of trash they slapped in to gain a cult.
I'm not saying every Pokemon needs to be a favorited icon of the industry, but they give so much special treatment to a weird SINGLE one-off per gen like Lucario and ignore the rest of the gen's roster.
Now, imagine you have a favorite from Gen 1 that's a bit weird, like Kabuto or something. You can easily find 17 Kabuto figures, poster, t-shirt, 3 movies, and it's own ride at Disney Land. I'm kidding but you get the point And that's ONLY because it's gen 1. It's given super special treatment for SOLELY being a gen 1 'mon. Even when it's not a notable favorite from the gen, even comparatively to Aegislash.
tldr; gen 1 is given special treatment for no reason while more recent gens are being treated as commercialized garbage meant to be super duper special for 1 gen only and are thrown away the next with little thought.
I'm not whining about the reusage of gen 1, I'm whining about how it's given special treatment over 7 other gens of Pokemon. It's one thing to have a mascot, but it's another to have another 151 mascots.
SEGA mandate I'm assuming, plus the design was essentially retired when Sonic was introduced in Brawl
>make pokemon that's literally just a non-uber version of a sinnoh mythical that takes design cues from it
>nope totally not pandering at all because I grew up with sinnoh haha :)
>Whispy Woods is changed somewhat in every game where he's a boss, making the fight familiar but still surprising in some way
>Pokemon and Sonic literally just slap old shit in their games that's either exactly the same or worse instead of changing it or doing something new
Execution of your callbacks, references and staples is important, user.
Nice. Where's that Santalune equivalent again? Or the awful remakes constantly being put out?
>Any region gets a little reference (""""pandering""")
>Kantoddlers think this is Kanto tier pandering.
And let me guess Steven showing up in HGSS to give you a Hoenn starter was also massive Hoenn pandering too, right?
wasted opportunity
>That image
Oh so you're the one cheering for the next Pikachu clone.
Probably not because he only hates Sinnoh specifically.
Green hill almost never has the same layout though its always different, making the stage familair but still surprising in some way.
>making the stage familair but still surprising in some way
That literally only happened in Mania.
Making Green Hill a straight line and adding some sand isn't a very good surprise.
>Green hill almost never has the same layout though its always different
Yes it does, all the boost stages have the same layout, particularly in Forces. You're always doing the same two things. Boost, quickstep, awful 2d section that nobody wants, boost, quickstep, boost.
>>Any region gets a little reference (""""pandering""")
Except nugenners are guilty of constantly doing this.
>red shows up as an optional post-game boss
>"P-PANDERING!"
>forest is similar to a previous forest
>"P-PANDERING!"
>sleeping pokemon is used as a sleeping roadblock
>"P-PANDERING!"
>bridge happens to be named after charizard
>"P-PANDERING!"
>npc mentions he was in kanto as a part of his backstory
>"P-PANDERING!"
Thats exactly the kind of fucking nonsense that people who bitch about kanto pandering complain about though. None of it is pandering they're all just harmless callbacks and acting like any of it is offensive in any way is stupidity to the highest degree. BUT if you really are going to adamantly act like a little reference to kanto is a big deal, then you better do it for every fucking region.
yeah this is totally the same green hill as sonic 1 lmao
>sneaky pebbles
Pokemon is unironically the deepest RPG ever made.
Generations was justified in using Green Hill because using older levels but adapting them into the modern and classic styles was the point and they made it an actually good level. Mania could've used something else but they still did it well enough that you could excuse it. But now they're just getting lazy and throwing it in without even trying to add anything because they think the fans will eat it up.
Too bad the games has an ocean of depth but only let the player see a puddle instead.
>>red shows up as an optional post-game boss
How many times has this happened again?
>>forest is similar
>similiar
THE SAME! THE EXACT SAME!
>>sleeping pokemon is used as a sleeping roadblock
You forgot to mention THE EXACT SAME POKEMON IS USED, THE EXACT SAME METHOD IS USED TO WAKE HIM UP AS WELL.
You still don't get it, it's not "Kanto pandering" because of just a single reference IT'S SEVERAL DAMM REFERENCES IN JUST ONE GAME, Kanto get's referenced so much per game, calling it a callback or a reference doesn't cut it. See 2 Gens in a row, prioritized Kanto pandering before their own region and Galar is already shaping up to be in the same direction.
Sort of? There's a lot more depth than people give it credit for. 800+ critters having various stat spreads pushing them to different roles. Natural abilities giving passive boosts and equippable items giving passive abilities. The RPS gameplay that can be circumvented by the fact you can learn moves outside of your type. Weather and terrain modifiers having varied effects. The ability to buff and nerf different stats. Status ailments that can actually help you if you know how.
And yet the main game absolutely refuses to use any of it. You have gym leaders that get steamrolled by a single Pokemon because in a rock paper scissors game they're stuck using paper 100% of the time and barely take advantage of coverage that exists IN THIS SERIES
>Water master
>Can't switch to a ground sub type to defend against electric
>has zero coverage against any grass type
>can't utilize rain at all
But yeah this is the master of his typing. Definitely.
Poketards are gigantic spergs who get very hipster about nostalgiafaggotry even though it's the only reason they give a single fuck about this bankrupt IP.
To be fair, in-universe gym leaders aren't trying to win at any cost to crush your spirit, they're supposed to be testing trainers and how they deal with certain types.
zoomers mad that boomers always win. that said, gamefreak doesn't understand how to appeal to boomers correctly. they just make shitty games now and throw in some cheap focus to gen 1 to try and appeal to nostalgia. being a g1fag sucks. gamefreak acts like just shoving kantomons in a game will make you buy it and everyone else hates you for it.
It has to be easy enough for 4 year olds
See this is all good during badges 1 - 4 when the training wheels are on and you're still learning the ropes. But by badges 5 and 6 you should be ready for a fight. And badges 7 through the E4 the game should start trying to take you out and really test you right?
I ask because after fighting my 100th dude with hacked legendaries I had an epiphany. The reason most people just try to click the super effective move is because that's all they know how to do. Because that's all the main game teaches you to do. Yes there's a trainer school that tells you things like "burn cuts ATTACK in half" but the game rarely offers opportunities to use it, so most people forget. Because most trainers, even outside of gym leaders, are stuck with monotype or bitype teams that get swept by 1 team member.
>Not all Pokémon will be available on sword and shield
>Excelt everybody and their mom knows damn well every single Gen 1 Pokémon will
It's always the same zone from every game
At this point, if we get a Generations 2, I'm expecting
Green Hill Act 2 for Sonic 1
Chemical Plant Act 2 for Sonic 2
Hidden Palace for Sonic 3
Tails's version of Speed Highway for Sonic Adventure
Radical Highway for SA2, but it's daytime anyway
Ocean Palace for Sonic Heroes except you go back to Seaside Beach anyway
So on, so forth. You get the point
I want to believe not even GF is this much of an ass, but I can totally see Kanto having the majority of their mons in while every other region is lucky to have even 30% of their dex.
Casuals don't want to think too hard on how to beat the game, but the mechanics are there for the autismos who want to use them in online matches and "competitive" battles.
It's part of having broad appeal.
I doubt people would be too happy if they just gave up like that or rehashed the Generations idea for the 3rd time.
I started with Red and I'm sick to death of Kanto though. Unova best region.
bethesda
I mean, it's only like 2 years until Sonic's 30th Anniversary, and it'll have been a decade since Generations proper. I don't think people would even mind the nostalgia pandering so much if there was any depth to it. They make these games out as if they consist of only one stage. Just imagine if we saw throwbacks to Scrap Brain, Mystic Cave and Flying Battery instead of the usual. Those levels would be awesome to have in modernized graphics, but no, seems like we're just going to rehash the same tired level aesthetics and gimmicks till the end of time.
XY literally gave you the Gen 1 starters right after you got to the 2nd town. SM introduced Alolan forms but only for Kanto pokemon, on top of stupid shit like Team Rocket again. Kanto pandering is fucking cancer.
>when this was announced, the genwunners wre crying because they were remaking Ash's original journey with no Misty or brock, and also adding new pokémon to the mix
Genwunners are filth who only enjoy pokémon for their nostalgia faggotry
>SM introduced Alolan forms but only for Kanto pokemon
There's nothing wrong with this unless you're just an autist who hates every Kanto Pokemon.
>Lucario
Ahahahah, holy shit.
Precisely the thing a Kantofag would say. Inherently there's nothing wrong with Alolan forms but the fact that they only went to Kanto Pokemon and nothing else is the problem. Other generations getting shafted so we can have 2 Mega Charizards is why people are upset.
there's no good reason for only KANTOOOOO pokemon to have them. it's immersion-breaking, because it's obvious it was done that way to appeal to nu-male manchildren rather than for any in-universe lore reasons.
>in-universe lore reasons
Says user referring to IP that can't even keep any consistency whatsoever in design guidelines.
Digimon fans are also getting sick of Adventure 01 pandering, so you're wrong. Agumon and Omnimon/Omegamon in particular are getting tiresome, though a case can be made for the Royal Knights in general
Adventure pandering is only a thing in the anime, thankfully. Hell, Apocalymon was actually absent from the games for the longest time and only made it into HM because they promised to patch in a new Digimon if a certain tweet got enough likes
adventure pandering is especially bad because both of toei's attempts at making a sequel so far have been garbage. tri was an insult to adventure's legacy.
