People meme here, but MGS as a series pretty consistently has new interesting mechanics. And the fact that some of them will try to stab you while held up was pretty neat. This and the enemy logic is pretty advanced in MGS2.

Yeah. Phantom Pain doesn't really get any credit for all the things it does right, looking back. The box mechanics are more in-depth than anything I could think up. And it probably has the best horse riding in any game I've played.

Honestly even up to MGSV I would say the games continuously have some of the best AI. Not in terms of being super smart but in terms of acting like complex people.

Yea the box stuff and other things are Classic Metal Gear Solid stuff where you can use gear in creative ways. Having D-Horse shit to crash small vehicles, using decoys as non lethal remote mines, using the shitting tape while hiding in an outhouse, throwing a bait bottle near guards when wild dogs or wolves are nearby etc.

Most of them are older mercenaries from before the Soviet Union who are still operating with Soviet-era surplus. A lot of them are middle-aged or older, despite how young their voice acting sounds. The game itself takes place in 2005.

You're wrong on the boss fights part, but 2 does have an abundance of bad characters. Though I think 4 might actually beat it there. Almost everyone in 4 fucking sucked.

Laughing Octopus is a great boss fight and too under rated.
4 boss fights also include Ocelot and the Rex/Ray. 4 have very good boss fights.

It has neat ideas but the solid eye makes it too obvious and the new tps mechanics make most of the fight just obvious shoot until you win affair. Compare that to the fight against the fear, sure you have the goggles which make him easy to spot but the place is filled with traps, his attacks can poison you and the control scheme makes just blasting him with an automatic rifle kind of a risky choice. Aside from that you have plenty of ways to fuck him over with the own universal rules of the game like feeding him poisonous food to make a nonlethal approach easier and the like. Laughing Octopus isn't bad but it could've been way better.
Rex vs Ray and Ocelot are cool set pieces but they're mechanically shallow, great stuff story wise but gameplay wise isn't that cleverly designed.

Most of Yea Forums though is too young to have owned a ps3 and it isn't emulatable or ported to current gen.

It lures you into thinking you're getting classic style MGS bosses, but they're just janky and not fun to fight at all.
The one thing I'll give them credit for is that you actually get a completely different cutscene for beating the Mr. Freeze guy nonlethally, where he joins you instead of dying.

I thought it was neat but honestly I think they're programmed to read if the "player pulled the trigger" so, empty or not, they're gonna aggro and try and kick the shit out of you.

Shinkawa did a great job over the years of making the series' evolution of technology recognizable. The Solidus armor became retroactively influenced by the Snake Eater sneaking suit and the Peace Walker battle dress. Walker Gear is the perfect origin for the Mk.II.

Sahelanthropus doesn't factor in at all because it was literally just Emmerich Sr's own oversized mecha manga action figure. Everything beyond the aesthetics was due to Mantis.

i bought a ps2 to play this and mgs3 specifically awhile back. i still haven't witnessed anything as kino as those two games since then. i thought mgs4 was pretty cool too, but i hated mgsv

MGSV + IH is pretty good.
I can see myself playing it again.
I love customizing the weapons and companions I have, but I also wish there were more to it.

It's a fun game but like everyone who's played it. Lost potential, I played it with IH as well after awhile but it just wasn't enough.

like the other user said, they're ex-Soviet special forces who moved on to mercenary work so they use a lot of Soviet kit. To Kojimbo's credit all the gear they wear is real, although they did alter some things. RD-54s were never made in black, and there's no such thing as orange TTsKO uniforms.
