Gearing up is very easy once you have main character geared. Farming EX gives you weapons. Entire arsenal. You will have tons of greed rolls gear from alliance raids. If you farmed savages you know what to do and need just push IL for alt.

The story simply is a major part of the game.
If you don't enjoy it at all, you probably won't enjoy the game.
The endgame raids are great (and you can even have a good experience in older raids because of level syncing), but that's pretty much all you have if you skip the story.

People in this thread are talking about leveling, but the typical MMO leveling is pretty much missing in FFXIV. Instead there's a really long JRPG story. You don't do quests to get exp or rewards, those are just side effects of progressing the story

Most of MSQ is either going to a spot to talk to someone, a random battle (that other players can fight too), or a single player mini-boss. All important shit you need to do involves other people, the only exception being the latest expansion having an AI companion system for the 5.0 dungeons solely to allow people to progress without needing to wait in a queue or beg their friends to join them.

I'm convinced raging faggots shill WoW because they've been playing so long without anyone even on their level that they can't handle the idea of Blizzard killing their own game slowly. You can keep praying Classic will save your dying MMO but remember that it's still being modernized and you'll never recapture that fleeting nostaglia you had all those years ago. WoW Classic may persist but only because the alternative is a dumpster fire deluded fans keep claiming will regain its luster after 8.2 drops, and 8.3 and so on and so forth as player numbers keep falling.

All you have to know is that Gaius is alive and hunting Ascians, there was a dude named Zenos who you beat but then an Ascian possessed his corpse and he's possessed a resistance fighter to get his body back. The Emperor is harassed by Ascians who he learned built the empire to fuck with people in the name of balance and so in a politics meeting he declares he wants to merge every universe by genociding everyone. While this is happening all the scions except Yda/Lyse (who is now ruler of the Ala Mhigans or some shit) are getting comatose by some twink telepathically telling you the world's going to end and eventually manages to grab you long enough to tell you to go grab a trinket he left at the Crystal Tower so he can talk to you properly.
Shadowbringers starts with you taking it and him dragging you into his world where he apologizes for accidentally ripping the souls out of all your friends and tells you that his world is tainted by light.

Many people understand "MMO leveling" as running around a hub doing a large number of quick and short quests, and instead of that FFXIV has a lot of reading and slow paced story progression.
Most MSQs don't even really have any kind of gameplay and are there just for the story, but some new players see the "run and talk to this NPC" as the content and might even skip the cutscenes.
I'm completely down with FFXIV's approach, but I can very well understand why it isn't what many players want.
Now that loads of people seem to try FFXIV as a replacement to WoW, some of them just want more what they're used to, and despite looking very similar on the surface, FFXIV simply focuses on completely different things than what WoW has ever been

I legitimately love fate partying and think its some of the comfiest most fun shit to do. Great to bump your exp before MSQ level lock outs. Something while searching for aether currents or area quests. Good for alts and partying with randos meeting new people. I'm in your shoes. 55 right now and my main issue is it's such a drag getting to gl3, god forbid gl4, after being spoiled by the old riddle of wind/60 second pb. I do like enlightenment spam when I can in dungeons, but even using brotherhood I feel like I'm barely getting chakras on some pulls so the 1 second cooldown on it is never used.

I like it a lot, but I can see its rotation relying largely on procs turning people away from it
basically all your attacks have 50% chance to give you access to an upgraded version of that attack, which in turn has 50% chance of giving you another instant oGCD attack
it's very simple but also very engaging

I don't know if there's an objective metric for it, but I personally like the gameplay in FFXIV much, much more.
It's also rewarding to beat stuff, since you're actually done with something instead of just unlocking a new tier of the exact same thing

Dude it's the first time in a long time I actually feel like I'm playing an mmo. I imagine the lack of challenging content will make grouping less desirable, but people love to hang around in cities and chat and talk about whatever it's completly different from the experience I'm used where people just spend all day doing their daily chores and logout and don't ever talk to anyone.

The social aspect is excellent. Sub fee helps keep out underage retards and BRs, so you dont need to be concerned about their presence

like there are legitimate complaints about the game like the removal of buttons and mechanics that were fun and essentially optional. there is literally no way to force players to use those skills and if shitters felt bad for not using them then let them feel bad. this is the same as healers who used to be able to DPS but now they can heal and only heal.

I gladly lose some speed and responsiveness if I get rotations that use more than ten actions and actually well designed boss battles
