Indecision.
You think if you don't choose the "best" game you could be playing right now it would be a waste of time so you just end up not playing any and wasting your time anyway.

You need to fill your life with stuff that's more exhaustive, we appreciate vidya more when there is more to do in the day and we can come home and sit our asses down and have that sacred time to play vidya.

If you're playing vidya too much with nothing going on else in your life, it isn't an escape anymore it's just your life. The mind is an amalgamation of conflicting emotions and if you're never miserable you'll also never have enjoyment. That's just what I think based on the same experience as what you're describing.

There are a couple games I want to clear from by backlog, but since I don't enjoy playing them I find it difficult to motivate myself to play them. I really wish I had been more selective in my purchases

Thinking modern games are actual videogames. You want to play a good game but you see your modern garbage and you don't want to play that shit.

Go play some 80s/early 90s real games.

Nintendo still makes fun games. Playing Mario odyssey and botw is getting me over my gaming slump. Mario odyssey especially is giving me 64/galaxy feels and some of the post game levels are fuck hard but fun.

I think its less indecision and more I just have shit taste in games and don't want to admit to myself I'd rather play Battlefield Hardline for another 8 hours than start one of the many excellent single player games on my computer.

Also I go to the range every day and play fighting game casuals every week so I have a good amount of stuff to do.

You mean shit gameplay with crap controls and a laughable camera? Yeah, that's how Odyssey and every other fucking 3d Mario game has been since Nintendo went full style over substance shit in the N64 era.

In Russia we call it gaming impotence. Or it's just modern vidya you don't want to play. Go play some classics instead, you won't regret it.

sounds like you haven’t played it because it controls amazingly especially compared to the shit show that was sunshine which is only “hard” because it’s controls are atrocious and bad level design. Some of the post moon missions in odyssey are the most polished, challenging levels I’ve run into. Requiring perfect timing and complete knowledge of mario’s moveset. Not sure why people try to claim it’s bad/soulless when it’s clearly the best 3D Mario.
