Same, Shogun 2 is the only one where I’ve conquered the whole map without getting bored, because the campaign AI is competent enough to rival you properly in the late game. Of course it does get easy after a while but the AI doesn’t seem to just roll over like it does in the other TW games.

The only time I felt the "How we want the TW campaign should be" is when I mod in longer recruitment times depending on faction and unit. MW2 Third Age mod is the best for this because the fucking orcs and goblins spawn so quickly you really need to think ahead and defend your lands or you will fucking lose.
In TW games, every faction spawns their basic units around the same time; and it equalises things which means it equalizes things for thep layer too much. You can just spend a turn recovering as opposed to 3 where you have to sit a while and actually train units.

I think Third Age does it best. The stronger your roster is, the longer the replenishment time you'll have, the longer the units will train. When I was playing Northern Dunedain, I still had an army of about 6 units that I hadn't been able to reinforce by the time the barracks event kicked in, due to regional recruitment restrictions and slow reinforcement. Really gave me the feeling I was playing with a band of brothers against all odds going to conquer orcish lands.
Some RTW mods like RSII also do that well, you can only recruit roman units in Italy, and have to rely on shittier local armies on longer campaigns.
