What is the best Silent Hill and why is it Silent Hill 4: The Room?
I don't believe this, it's just bait for a comfy Silent Hill thread

I unironically think that SH4 is the best. They make the apartment your "safe" space the entire game, and then they take that from you near the end and the last arc of that game captured despair like no other in the series.
at least make good bait, say the best is origin or something, silent hill 4 is pretty decent, i can totally see it being someone's favorite
my favourite is the second episode but i can't deny this episode had a strange and unique atmosphere.
never finished it though
It's a bit sad that nowadays ya gotta b8 people to start decen threads, but that's just the times I guess...
Anyway, let's turn this into a proper SH thread by re-posting the latest SH PC Guide + DL links:

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
DON'T use W10's own virtual disc app! It will not work.
Don't install under C:\Program Files\ ! This will cause issues.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate using ePSXe or PCSX-R.
Follow the SH2 widescreen fix site's instructions to the teeth, and you should be fine.
For 3 & 4, check the Guide.
>Protips
-Play in the release order.
-Never play below Normal difficulty! Especially in case of #2!
-Replaying them all is recommended; tons of replay value.
-Turn down the ingame Brightness setting, for better gamma & colors!
-Don't try to kill everything that moves, especially outdoors. Leg it, or sneak!
-Turning OFF the flashlight can really help w/ stealth!
1>2>3>haven't played 4
I don't know if it's the best but it was definitely the scariest imo
>They look like monsters to you?
SH4 is criminally underrated, a very misunderstood game in the series.
I liked it back in 2004, and I still like it now. Wouldn't call it as god-tier as SH1 or 2, but it's definitely spooky AF.
Bitches complaining about "muh escort quest!" literally suck at vidya.
I like alot of what 4 did, its a massive departure from the other games though unfortunately. Theres a burden on those who have made classics and then have to follow it up.
Can’t be a SH thread without some Green Text stories or game ideas.
liked some of the setpieces but the backtracking and having to care of eileen all the time did it in for me
>Bitches complaining about "muh escort quest!" literally suck at vidya.
Escorting just always sucks, it doesn't have to do with skill. It wasn't hard escorting Maria in SH2 but I still found it unpleasant.
>mfw there's a silent hill thread
backtracking killed any enjoyment I had for this game
>-Never play below Normal difficulty! Especially in case of #2!
Why? I'm garbage at 3D games.
Me and a few other anons in one of these threads where throwing around story ideas. I’ve been toying with it ever since. Almost finished the cover since I want to make a short story comic. (Pic I posted)
>Main character was taken away from SH by her grandfather as a baby. Does not remember anything about SH nore is told anything about it. She grows up and becomes a world famous violinist, gets married and gets pregnant.
>A few years go by and she has stops preforming due to parenthood and her skills are lacking because of this. She try’s to play but she just can’t anymore due to depression of her lost life and talent.
>One night she has a dream where an old man comes to her and offers her a deal. All her talent and more back in exchange for the child. She agrees and the old man hums a tune in her ear and she wakes up. Oddly worried she runs to the baby’s room to check on it only to find it sleeping fine. Feeling silly knowing it was just a dream she goes back to bed.
>For the next few months her depression sets in even more since she’s beinging to practice again but she cant get in the swing of things, plus all she wants to do play that melody she has in her dreams but she just can’t remember it making her overly erratic and obsessive about it.
>One day baby goes missing and the cops and detectives are at a loss. A week goes by and hope seems lost. She in laying crying in bed when she glances at her violin and remembers that horrible dream. She skeptically picks it up and try’s to play. She drops the violin in complete horror because not only did she just play better than she ever has before, she played that haunting that the old man hummed to her in her dream which she couldn’t completely remember before but now played it in perfect tune.
Basically from there she hunts down the song and it’s origin which leads her to silent hell to find her baby.
I didn't mind trying to care for Eileen. It felt like I was in someone else's nightmare trying to help them get through it.
maria can die in SH2, at least eileen is invincible.
The background will be the normal SH on the bottom with a torn down messed up mirrored version on the top. I want to come up with at lest 5 original monsters as well.
mandatory to watch for all SH fans

I think SH4 had my favorite premise and introduction in the series, but everything after that I can take or leave.
All of the combat and escorting was frustrating, but I loved the initial exploration of the apartment itself, when it was just dead quiet, and somehow both unsettling and comforting. Watching for strange behavior outside of your windows and door and calling out to people who might as well be a thousand miles away.
SH3 is best SH
it had good highs but lower lows than 1 and 2
SH2 > Shattered Memories > SH1 > first half of SH4 > SH3 > Downpour > Homecoming > second half of SH4 > Origins > HIT THE LEVER
God tier:
Silent hill 2, 3
Great:
Silent hill 1, 4
Okay:
Downpour, shattered memories
Not worth it:
Everything else
anyone here use mednafen for sh1
i use epsxe. pcsxr lags and the gui for all-in-one emulators always seems to suck.
Replaying it rn. It's a shame it has a lot of issues, but it's worth it just for the pros
Pros
>immortal ghosts are spooky as hell
>apartament hauntings are fucking kino
>combat system is the least clunky in the main series
>the whole plot about the sacrifices and Walter was great and memorable
Cons
>map draws itself, taking away the feeling of being lost for a while until you find a map
>absence of cool gimmicks like the radio, so there is no strategy and decisions around combat
>absence of flashlight. Mainly because stage illumination is very poorly made, there are no tones
>huge lack of fire weapons
>huge lack of bosses
>huge lack of puzzles. No puzzle difficulty level. There are only 3, and the game literally spoonfeeds you how to solve them.
>half of the game is an escort mission
>stage design is one of the worse I've ever played in a horror game. The forest is the best example. It is so linear and shallow
>obnoxious backtracking. It gives you the feeling you are playing an unfinished game
>Henry is probably the worst protagonist of a main SH. He is just an unlucky guy who was the main character just because he was there. He has 0 relationship with the background story. So symbolism around main character is totally forgotten here.
Anyway, I loved SH4 and I love the way you love it despite of its flaws
SH3 has the best atmosphere and both gameplay and graphics were improved from the first 2 games, it also explains the plot behind SH1 and SH2.
>lower lows
Such as?
I disagree with sh3 having the best atmosphere. It's too actiony and aims for a more expressly "scary" aesthetic which makes it feel more like a cheap horror movie. I still think it is overall the best silent hill game because of the graphics and gameplay but the atmosphere is lacking compared to some of the other games.
i just really hated how heather went from being scared and crying to joking and making fun of the monsters mainly, totally killed the atmosphere for me each time it happened. and i didn't like how many ways you could die in a cutscene.
Not sure if any of you noticed this, the whole thing about Mary explains the entire story of the goddess in SH3.
Its obvious that the most memorable is 2 but i liked 3 a lot. It was a crawl through the devils anus, an experience on its own. 4 is cool.
Bought lost in vivo, preety interesting tribute too
>tfw no lisa gf
it hurts
origins isnt fucking canon
Is origins this bad?
Too bad that on your first playthrough, by not knowing that, you end up using healing items during the first half, which leaves you crippled for the second.
I had to restart the game because I didn't have the resources to finish it
It was a good but badly implemented idea
Which version of Silent hill do you prefer?
The town as the home of an esoteric cult or as a haunted place to punish guilty individuals
They are one and the same.
>tfw you will never be a multimillionaire and pay the ex members of team silent to reunite and make the game of their dreams
SH2 had barely any reference to the cult
There's some good music, otherwise I just found it pretty forgettable.
I imagine that there were plenty of limitations trying to make it exclusive for the PSP, and the way that the SH1 characters repeatedly show up and don't really have anything to do with the protagonist makes it feel like more of a cameo-based fanfiction then something that was really allowed to stand on its own.
i liked both. wish more people would be able to appreciate both instead of just saying "this is the one i like and the other is boring"
Is that baby holding PH thumb? Nice touch would read. And speaking of music what game has the best soundtrack?
Oh jesus that pissed me off too
>bu bu but it's actually her Alessa's part interacting
Yeah bullshit.
The "god" the cult believes in only exists because they believe it exists, the town isn't punishing anybody on purpose on SH2, they are being punished because they feel like they have to, the city itself has no mind of its own, it simply reacts to people's subconscious thoughts.
>haunted place to punish guilty individuals
I don't think that was really what they were going for with Silent Hill, at least not with with SH2. The people in town weren't being punished by a supernatural judge so much as they were just punishing themselves.
Angela was just a victim really, but her trauma and self-loathing gave life to her own personal hell.
You are wrong.
I think 3 has the best soundtrack but 4 has the best theme song.
SH4 is literally P.T. on the Playstation 2.
Hiiiii guys, I finished 3 for the first time yesterday - let me share my thoughts.
For as long as I've seen Silent Hill discussed on the internet, it seemed like 3 was usually considered a good game, but still a noticeable step down from the previous two. Now that I've finished it, I get why some people think this. The game has a "been there, done that" feel all over it: Most of its settings were already used in either 1 or 2 (the Hospital is a literal repeat actually), lots of "scare tricks" are done in the same way, and most importantly, the game's structure is the simplest it has ever been. Almost everything is parceled out into clear-cut dungeons with their own maps, the Otherworld is no longer a surprise, and town exploration is basically dead in this game (shame since it was a really nice part of SH1).
Also, the game tries a new thing where they frequently drop you in a room with tons of enemies to make you panicked, but it just becomes fucking annoying due to the camera and controls. The bosses are also janky too, but you can actually "break" each fight easily to make it fair, which is pretty cool so they get a pass from me. Also, this game's characters are solid, and they get a lot of mileage out of only four main characters (Claudia is a little weak but ehh) - not quite as great as in 2, but still noteworthy. It probably sounds like I hate this game, but really I just feel like it lacked something new to put it on the level of 1 or 2. SH1 has the exploration, the novelty, the thick snowy and ethereal atmosphere with spots of pure horror, while 2 is really melancholy and hits you deep when you don't expect it - and the part after seeing the video tape until the end is just perfect. The closest 3 comes to this is that cutscene on the way to Silent Hill, but it's not quite there. I still liked the game, I just wish it had more to it.
This is also true. It was the Leonard fight I think? She was probably just too mad over Claudia to care
You will have a lot of fun playing 4 since there are new additions. Some of them are bad, others are just great
true, but 3 has the best puzzles, "dungeons" and is the scariest by far
I only like 3 because of Heather
>it also explains the plot behind SH1 and SH2.
Explain.
>the whole thing about Mary explains the entire story of the goddess in SH3.
Explain.
That's what I heard. It's good they changed things up, even if the end result is pretty flawed. Once you can predict the structure underneath and when the Otherworld is going to happen, a lot of the horror comes out of it.
I thought 1 had the best puzzles. This is only playing on normal though, I tried the Shakespeare puzzle on hard for 3 and I still haven't beaten it.
I wish she had more time to develop as a person. The idea is really cool but her arc is spread super thin across the game's cutscenes.
It's that simple, Maria exists because James wants a substitute for Mary, the power of the town is great enough to create an actually conscious entity out of thin air, the story of the goddess was the same, it's a very garbled tale of intense warfare between tribes before the English arrived, two people were so fed up of the bloodshed they hoped for a savior and the town's power created a conscious entity which they thought to be a goddess, then the English arrived and equated the sun goddess with Yahweh and everything only downhill from there.
Notice the original goddess becomes ill and dies after people stop desire her existence, the same happens to Maria in one of the endings.
>as a haunted place to punish guilty individuals
This is what casuals think Silent Hill is all about.
But actually SH1-3 all follow similar rules (they are different in each game nonetheless) and just have different themes.
I’m still sad about what happens to her
Lol ya another user said if the baby was not doing that, that they would be disappointed. I’m glad they brought it up as it is kinda unsettling which is what I’m going for.
Also I’m working on Monster ideas so if anyone has any what would fit my theme I’d love to hear them.
>Notice the original goddess becomes ill and dies after people stop desire her existence, the same happens to Maria in one of the endings.
But James just wanted Mary back, he never stop liking her, in the Maria ending the delusion simply keeps going, the sickness part was just to show that she was going to have the same fate as Mary (likely because the doppelganger can't leave Silent Hill) and that James's suffering was cyclical and was never going to end as long he was delusional. But i get what you mean.
Also the church's paintings are about the cult itself, not the natives, SH1-3 never really gave any nod to the natives, in SH2 they just mentioned it was a sacred native land and that's about it, the rest is all cult.
Also i have a feeling Team Silent never created a proper canon about the cult lore they just kept mingling esoteric, religious and satanic elements for the coolness factor, in SH1 things are legit satanic while in SH3 it feels like a religion of it's own and even anime-like in a way, like a fictional religion that you would find in an anime, SH2 has more of a haunted Anglo colonists atmosphere with all the references to colony prisons and executioners.
I do, looks nice.
does the game run with black borders on the top and bottom for you
in full screen the boot up sequence (ps2 shit) fill the screen vertically but the actual game has small borders on them
I used retroarch and i played in windowed mode, don't really remember any bars to be honest.
I tested both PCSXR and EPSE, but the retroarch mednafen was the one that resembled the PS1 version the most.
Silent Hill 4 is genuinely my favorite in the series guess my IQ
16
I saved during the Hoffman quest, but when I started the game again I'm out of the sewer in the next part of the game. I'm guessing there's no way to go back. Now let me get this straight.
1) The cult is smuggling drugs into the town to sell to the tourists.
2) They're using this hallucinogenic tranquilizer to pacify a powerfully psychic Alessa so she can give birth to Samael.
3) Her psychic powers go haywire due to the drug and cause the entire town to descend into hell.
4) Travis acquires a baby which is a reincarnated Alessa and places her on the side of the road for Harry Mason and his wife to find and adopt.
5) Grown child Alessa returns to Silent Hill, but now which is the true ending leading to SH3? And is the Flauros holy magic or a darkness artifact and how is that supposed to suppress/enhance the rebirth of Samael? I've beaten the first four games and I still have trouble following it.
50. SH4 is mediocre.
They had the opportunity to create something great, but the game just falls flat.
>Grown child Alessa returns to Silent Hill, but now which is the true ending leading to SH3?
The normal true ending.
>And is the Flauros holy magic or a darkness artifact and how is that supposed to suppress/enhance the rebirth of Samael?
SH never explained anything, Flauros, Seal of Metatron, Aglaophotis... none of their real uses were ever explained, we can only guess by seeing what they did in the series. Flauros seems to be some sort of powerful tool that can damage the energy that resides in Silent Hill.
>28 posters
