in future events, valve should just assign you and a disproportionate percentage of your friends list to the same team, while trying to ensure that some of your friends list doesn't already play games used to get points so they'll feel pressured to start playing the games with their friends to win the event

Making daily purchases essentially mandatory to participate at anything more than a token level was a scum move, especially since they tried to obfuscate this fact with with a convulsed point and capacity system. How they've handled all the issues has been a total shit show too--changing how the race works to fix foreseeable problems is dumb and will only piss people off. Changing how the prizes work is dumb and will only piss people off.

This was a poorly thought out event from the start.

Well besides that, which severely imbalances teams and forces them to "balance" things out regardless of whether or not they intended to rig it from the start, many things were confusing and buggy as fuck. Various types of points, things weren't explained properly, people losing and gaining points randomly, no clear indication of a team's speed and the numbers shown didn't coincide with the visuals, bad graphic design, mobile game tier bullshittery where you're given tens of thousands of points but you have to pay money to use them
