This. Mahjong has this problem where there's almost this sense of mysticism and reverence behind it, when a lot of it is majority luck. Especially the way the crowd treats proplayers. A lot of them say "Oh, a pro player is so good that they would NEVER EVER deal into a Yakuman". Watching videos of pro players getting Yakuman though, often times, they draw it by tsumo, and the other players I never see even having the winning tiles. Sometimes they're still playing like normal.

The amount of luck needed to consistently draw your winning tile more, while the other players are just never drawing yours, seems insane to me.

It's possible that someone is incredibly throughout their entire mahjong lifetime or after they get good or even just have like a 1,000 game lucky streak. That is a probability too. Over an even longer, much longer, time it should even out but it is no guarantee. There will still be some people that remain on the edges of the bell curve anyway. You can call that luck.

That all depends on the guy to your left, I have a tendency to drop shit that people need for chi really often but I discard as early as possible to not have to sit on a tile I don't need and deal in later.

I find that ponning three of a kind is really fucking easy to do though (maybe a bit less if you're also going for chanta like a complete nyagger), you almost always get like three pairs in your hand and from there it's an easy way to win, I think that would qualify for the yaku as well. Suu An Kou is only for non-opened hands for a reason.

Make one if you want one.

Didn't finish it yet but it's got good production values and feels like you're watching a theater play if you're into that. I like it, it starts with the Washizu fight so it's a good follow-up to the anime, it was made in 2015 though so it doesn't have the end of the game since Akagi manga ended in 2018.

I felt the same way once I hit gold. The game gets dramatically less fun when you get there because Japs are a bunching of folding turbo betas and will never make a risky play for the entire game.
