Game Freak for instance doesn't give a shit if you want National Dex back, you're easily replaceable. They're being selective, but not for you, but how the game/situation seems fit. And new Pokemon fans who haven't played the former games won't recognize 5th/4th pokemons anyway, they'll think of it as new as well. They need to constantly churn games every one to two years and of course there's going to be the inevitable "haha now here's the newly improved same games we've sold you before, but this time, we remembered to put things that weren't back in the original".

1st Super Mario Maker didn't really sell that well for a Mario game, i remember Nintendo pushing it very hard tho in the Wii U era

I think what helped for smm1 and now smm2 is youtube. When you see your favourite youtuber/twitcher play your level, it will push to buy the game.
Wasnt that big with smm1, but if you now google a bit, you will find 2-3 years old "I play community level" vods and now many streamers bought the game. This could mean big bucks for nintendo, now that the streamer market is well developed.
