Larry was looking out for his daughter above all else. Larry had heard about Lee being a murderer and was another reason to distrust him besides Lee standing up to him in the drug store.

Lee shares the whole thing if you tell the stranger Lee has hurt his wife. It's a really great moment, and I can't find any footage of it on youtube save for some LP. Even the Walking Dead wikias with transcripts of No Time Left don't have this bit of dialogue, which is really a shame. Brilliant acting from Dave Fennoy. Compare this:

He was also overprotective of his only surviving relative and quite possibly suffering from emotional trauma and stress.
