AoD has the best model aside from the tiny boobs. Best model is still TR 1 cover art and loading screens
The palettes they used back then were bolder and warmer. Lighting had fewer sources meaning high contrast and larger shadows which made images jump out. Also due to the relative lack of detail, you had to use your imagination and fill in the gaps a bit. All of this makes rendered images from the '90s still pleasing to look at despite modern advances.
TRII was so fucking good, I can't even beat any of the 2nd levels from III they dropped the ball so hard

I do find it ironic as hell that a character initially designed with fanservice in mind attracted a ton of women to play her games.
Most of the gameplay is on your own through areas dripping with atmosphere in abandoned old ruins with the occasional monster here and there. The problem with later games is that you had either a help team or Lara just wouldn't shut the fuck up. Also modern Lara is whinny while old Lara was playful but disciplined.

Character designs had to be really clean because the designers were working with low poly models and low res textures. A lot of games these days suffer from a problem where there's so much geometry and such a wide color palette for both objects and lights that the final visual is a patterned blur that doesn't look like anything.

I didn't know one girl who actually played video games when these games that came out that didn't want to be Lara Croft, Chun-li or Jill Valentine. They knew they were "babes" and guess what? They were fucking cool with that.
I had the luxury of dating a woman back then who looked like her a bit (especially the figure) and cosplayed as Lara. Too bad she was fucking psycho but as we know, if something is too good to be true it probably is.

I dunno why everyone moved toward realistic design. Even if you sculpt everything in hi res with muscle definition you can achieve a nice style. But they don't. Hell most of the time now they just laser scan shit and clean it up.

I think that crystal dynamics modellers are professionals and did a good job.
it's the CGI idealized model. the ingame model looked nothing like it but thats how the devs intended her to look. I think the last time we saw a CGI lara was in the 2013 reboot
90s cg was good because it had a lot of care put into it to make it look good
