Difficult to say. I jump around from a bunch I really enjoy.
>Dawn of War
>AoE2
>SupCom
>Older Total Wars to an extent
I'd say they're all pretty good as is. Dawn of War I play with Ultimate Apocalypse for fun but I wish it was more balanced. AoE2 and SupCom are goat. I like to play modded versions of Medieval 2 totaru waru.
Also Company of Heroes with Blitzkrieg mod.
Age of Empires 3. I like the decks.
I'm not really into competitive buildorders or macro, I just want a comfy empirebuilder with occasional war. So, I guess
-Group Houses in stacks of 4, less pop, maybe a fatigue system ala Rise of Empires with bigger towns providing higher area of attrition.
-Each civ having access to one of 4 exclusive Supercards that completely change their gameplay. Thinking specifically of Wars of Liberty mod Italians, a Viva Verdi age 3 card that gives redshirts and a Opera building that trickles coin. One of my favorite card edits was Seven Samurai for japanese, an age 1 card that costs 800 food (so you either get this or your age-up) that ships 7 samurai to, ironically, rush the opponent and gives them a boost against cavalry.
broodwar
to improve it I would remove the drm, post it on gog and make it playable on mobile and all systems
DEFCON because it's /pure/. It's already perfect.
I haven't played it in ages but Tiberian Sun will remains one of my favorites just for that godlike atmosphere.
I build for China!
I would like to see a combination of C&C Generals and Supreme Commander (the first one ofc), if that one makes any sense. Ie huge maps that also force you to make "forward bases". Or tactical and counter-tactical missile gameplay.
I also admit to not liking playing with humans much (and I used to play a lot of SC and SCII) because eventually RTSs devolve into "speed" and "build orders", with only the masters having any chance of interesting game happening inbetween them.
I, much like the little autist I am, much prefer to sort of "role play" with myself. However eventually you do hit a problem where you will either absolutely stomp the A.I. or it will be so cheaty it will stomp you.
I would, unironically, like some sort of magical deep learning/neural networky fancy pants thing that technically it could stomp me any time it wanted, but in reality, would intentionally be adjusting itself to be challenging and creative.
Basically, yes, I want to feel like a winrar, but also want to occasionally "fall into traps/abuses", or have it do so and not however be an obvious game over. And want to have fun at my own pace, but not be forced to read the wiki or study replays like a school subject.
company of heroes 1. It is juts amazing. it has two factions that have similar units but there are some very slight differences that end up creating a really cool assymmetric game. Also the doctrine system allow for far more strategies as they often allow you to either close a hole in your strategy or open up a new unit that makes your strategy a lot better.
Rework PE and brits. Take some of the improvements from COH2 like hold fire on AT guns and fuel on call ins.
>make it playable on mobile
how. you need hotkeys.
id improve it by making hotkeys more logical. fuck probe being on P.
>look up recent RTS games
>they're all from 12 years ago
Did they just stop making games from this genre?
Its all about the onlines and the user-engagements nowdays, and lets be honest, SC2 ate the entire market for that one. (and kids nowdays are starting to be too ADHD even for that one)
They must also be exceptionally, unbelievable hard to balance. As such, they either have to have utterly boring "mirror" factions to ensure they are so by default, or they need eons of playtesting and no one has the stamina/patience to try to compete with Blizzards baby regarding that.
yes. Most big RTS studios are either gone or changed. Look at blizzard, they tried to make bank with SC2, only to see it falter before they could feed everyone 2 60 dollar expansion packs. They even had to step back and basically give people wings of liberty for free jsut to make people buy LOTV. Same with the esports scene required them constantly pumping money in it to keep it rolling and trying to kill SC1. And they didnt get any good DOTA-like games (which they hoped for with their map editor. thats why they changed terms of service to make everything made in it blizzard's property). Meanwhile some shitty cardgame printed millions. So when both teams appear on the monthly conference, and one team has to admit their shit is doing okay, while the other team can show insane profits, it is pretty clear for blizzard where the money is.
Then we have westwood, who died after RA3 just didnt cut it.
Then we have relic, which made DOW3.
then we have stuff like act of war and grey goo that just didnt do it.
Its like the fighting community, but it lacks asia as a viable market. And shit like dota, building oriented games and dotachess split the market . lots of people juts want to control a few units or build a pretty base, not go autistic 1v1 rush.
you can set your own keyboard layout in the menu in broodwar. When was the last time you played broodwar? Must been ages. I use gridlayout. About mobile: use external keyboard.
>When was the last time you played broodwar?
2006 i think?
>favourite
Ground Control 2
>how would you improve it
Give recon terradynes better anti-armour damage and make Viron units slightly cheaper
Nothing beats supreme commander FA. I want a new game of that scale so bad.
>What's your favourite RTS
DoW 1
>How would you improve it?
By not getting any sequels.
we are all going to FUCKING DIE
C&c generals zero hour of course
Its not profitable to make RTS games anymore. The majority of people that usually buy games today don't really care about playing singleplayer games like others did in the past.
That's not to say that people won't buy singleplayer games, its more along the lines of people want games with replay value in their campaigns / sandbox. Takes a game like Red Alert, from start to finish the missions all play the same and end the same (unless you fail, then you restart). Most pople today don't want that, they want to make choices that affect their campaign in a different way each playthrough so they can start all over again if necesary.
As much as I love old RTS games something about the new ones that try to emulate the old game mechanics doesn't click anymore. I can still play the old games just fine, but the new ones no. Its like they need something new, an improvement of sorts.
starcraft was on the n64. my friend had a copy
MY LIFE FOR AIUR
Well I guess you must be an expert.
Earth 2150
let's say a remake wouldn't be casualized or otherwise ruined:
-tighter balancing in ED campaign which has way too much money
-some aircraft nerf, since all campaigns can be majorly cheesed with them
-maybe do away with the global time limit since the amount of remaining missions is much more relevant
-another main base-style map called the fleet, where naval units can be built and kept between missions; ships in water can "travel to fleet" by leaving the map boundaries, instead of being transported by the transporter. When lava replaces water, all naval units are converted into money at a 75% rate or so
-subordinates and priority system in campaign: different missions have different priorities and you don't have the time to do all of them yourself, but you can autoresolve them by delegating them to subordinates. Lower priority missions have fewer enemies and more money. If a mission description says it's urgent, like UCS New York, you need to do it right away or leave it to the subordinate. Every mission's priority rises by 1 with every mission done. If you go somewhere else when another mission's priority is max, it's automatically autoresolved afterwards. This way you need to decide your next move carefully, instead of just having to complete every mission in every season before the next tier becomes available
-integration of tunnels into overworld; places where the two planes meet seamlessly
-soft ground in tunnels which is faster to dig through but can be caved in when attacked aboveground
-implementation of features that didn't make it in the final game: terrain can slow movement but robots are unaffected, explosions can change geography of affected area, water can flow and flood, etc.
-multiplayer conquest campaign: starts with winter. Every matchup is vs. a different faction. Gradually progresses to lava pits. At the end the faction which mined the most money wins. Data is gathered from multiplayer games played during the campaign.
i played need for speed most wanted using the arrow keys. That its functional doesnt make it good
not him but anonymous relic employees did let slip that they think RTS just isnt a market anymore and the studio is killing itself by making new ones.
AoE2 and Broodwar.
Pretty much the only two games that I played super competitive. DoW1 gets an honorable mention, as it came the closest for me to relive those golden days.
And even DoW1 is old as fuck now. Fuck.
I'm not. Its just what I heard other developers talk about during meet ups and shit.
It also doesn't really end at RTS in general though (and thank god walking simulators are going to die because of this) its just that they are the genre that take the hit more often when it comes to profit and overall sales.
RTS is dead, let it lie.
Its reality now I'm afraid. Unless there's some sort of innovation in the rts genre making these games based on the old formula won't work anymore unless its an already established IP. And even that established IP needs to be done right to get all the old fans to buy the new installment and through word of mouth get more (new people) to buy it.
>AoE II
The AK-47 of RTS games, it’s old but it just works so damn well that you gotta love it. If I could improve on it, I’d probably try to add even more differences between nations, but I absolutely love it as it is.
>Wargame series
Nothing else quite captures the feel of being a cold war military commander like this series does, it’s insane how much hardware it has and how well the core gameplay works despite all the moving parts. Unfortunately, Eugen is shit at balancing, and someone should go and hold the studio at gunpoint until they make another final big balance patch. Also, go back in time and fire the guy who decided that naval warfare is worth wasting time on.
>Supreme Commander FA
Absolutely wonderful scale for warfare, with UI and tools that make managing even the biggest groups of units very painless. In a way, I think that it really is the definitive RTS game, especially if the factions were given a bit more ”soul”, now they feel kinda bland and generic besides from few standout units.
>CnC Generals
The gameplay may be kind of basic CnC, but god damn all that fun and personality they have managed to add to the game. In a perfect world, we could get a game that plays like Supcom and still has the feel and soul of Generals.
>In a perfect world, we could get a game that plays like Supcom and still has the feel and soul of Generals.
I’d kill for this.
which established IP? SC2 failed. I mean sure, they made money, but i dont think SC2 free to play and being unable to sell millions of wings of liberty and HOTS and LOTV was their plan.
DOW3 killed DOW
COH2 is barely holding on
>C&C Generals
>CoH
By adding water vehicles on both and larger maps to CoH
AoE3 was fun as hell. Wasn't better than 2 obviously but it was great. The music was god-tier.
youtube.com
Like I said, even if its an established IP unless its a "masterpiece" it won't really have success. It also depends on what you, me, or the publisher / developer considers a success. As someone on the receiving end of the end product I was satisfied with SC2 and CoH2, but I'm not a developer or the publisher of these games to know if they trully hit the mark.
SC2 at least tried to innovate in some way with their campaign but by the time HOTS came out the market focus started to shift and the old formula of RTS games was starting to fade (and today its completely faded). I'm pretty sure that if Supreme Commander came out with a new installment in their franchise, going back to large numbers and no unit caps, they too will not have "success" unless the campaign is played differently from what people grew up with.
reforged when?
Loved the game for the superb pixel art alone.
If anything, I wish the retro craze would lead to someone trying their hands on a sprite based RTS again.
How is Wargame in single player? Looks pretty tight and fast paced. Been planning on playing it but I imagine coming into this game this late I'd get my ass handed to me in multi, is ai good for skirmish mode?
Sprites are too difficult for indie devs, it's why they never advance beyond NES era coloured squares.
Dawn of war: winter assault
The game still worked on a system of hard counters like aoe2 instead of the soup that dark crusade became.
I'd improve it with all the races introduced in later games
>TA: kangdoms
my melanin enriched brother
I want hard counters back. Soulstorm just feels spongy and too forgiving.
>>Dawn of war: winter assault
>liking DOW turtle assault
The Brigador guys could probably pull it off, but they're busy making Brigador 2.0 right now.
There's DoWpro mod for Soulstorm which brings back hard counters among other things.
I need to finish this game. Blowing shit up felt so satisfying. It's like a modern Cannon Fodder.
starcraft brood war
starcraft 2
and Rise of Nations as one of the most underrated RTS games i've played. That shit was so much fun
I thought that was 3D with a filter.
Unfortunately, it’s not good. The AI tends to cheat and spam blatantly in skirmish matches, and the dynamic campaigns in ALB and RD are unfortunately crap. The only good singleplayer experience is the first game’s campaign that features scripted missions that are actually quite nicely challenging.
It's like Crusader, Cannon Fodder, and Future Cop LAPD had a hot sweaty threesome and this was the result.
It might be. The end result is really convincing, though.
Warlords Battlecry 2 n 3 cause its fun
I guess you could nerf heroes so you cant just solo everything with them and fuck off with spell failure chance.Mby add ships n naval combat
Oh for fuck sakes now I have to reinstall Crusader.
