I can't stand half the cast in Jap dub and I can't stand half the cast in English dub. Japanese Nia makes me want to stab a pen through my eardrums so I just went with English.

The dub had a lot of potential but they fucked it all up with awful directing and editing. A lot of the dialogue sounds like it was cut and pasted together, and like they had no idea what scene they were acting for. Also Rex just couldn’t fucking scream.

I honestly wonder if they just dragged someone off the streets to do his VA because holy shit. Like it's a goddamn scream man, I ain't even asking for it to be good at this point just like make it sound like a scream. But that nigger can't even do that.

Apparently he did some real life acting so I have no idea. You’d think when they cast him for a shounen protag one of the auditions would involve screaming. But even then, decent voices like Jin and Malos still suffered from the terrible editing and direction.

The most likely scenario is that Nintendo thought the game would bomb in the west and just threw it to some cheap studio with no quality control. Probably blew the VA budget on the japanese talent.

It's still Monolith Soft. Takahashi claims that optimizing for handheld would have held the game back, it's not really meant to be played as portable, mobile game but they had to shoe-horn it in there because of the Switch's hardware.

The voice direction is fine, people from different titans have different dialects, like the Gormotti being Welsh and the Mor Ardanians being Scottish.

It's not even Scottish banter. Xenoblade 2's voice acting is fucking inconsistent. At least with Xenoblade 1 it was all britbongs.
Rex is northern English, Nia is Welsh, the Blades all sound American, Vandham is Australian, Morag is Scottish, Zeke is upper-class London

I don't know if that really comes under voice direction but I agree, that was a good choice. I mean things like the actors not being given proper context for scenes and not getting enough chances to redo lines that they weren't happy with.

I think the problem is xenoblade 2 was way too anime compared to the first one. Any typical anime humor scene or dramatic scene falls flat with brits VA but somehow the later one works in xenoblade 1 like fiora death scene. Maybe they have better voice actor overall.

You do realize this was intentional, right? In the Japanese voice-acting, each of the titans' civilizations, and thus all the party members, all have very different Japanese dialects to reflect where they come from. They tried to replicate this in the English dub by using very different English dialect from around the globe.
It's actually really cool how the dubbing team picked up on the Japanese dialect detail.
Blades were made to sound American to solidify how different they are from normal people.

Honestly speaking most of the dub was fine. Nia had some eh moment but her accent was oddly fitting. Pyra sounds flat sometimes but her voice was good. I really liked dubbed Gramps because I'm not a fan of the japanese old man voice and his mascot form was grating in jap voice. Malos' voice makes me wish he was the protag instead.

The only major flaw is Rex who somehow even managed to sound worse than the generic weebshit male protag dub VAs. Which of course wouldn't have been that big of the deal, except he was the fucking protagonist and in almost every goddamn scene. My god he couldn't even muster up a grunt for the sword swings in battles.

It's really unfortunate, because the little banter bits are some of the best dialogue in the game. The actual story lines are pretty bad, especially towards the end.

I didn't mind the dub. It's really rough at the start since english rex is awful at the hotblooded anime cliche that japs have had like 40 years to perfect, but the game never really needs him to yell hiya again after that so it's fine.
