Anyone else think PS2 era visuals are beatiful? I find the pixel shimmering, polygonal edges, and flat textures to be kinda charming.

it's called nostalgia

Not really. A lot of the games back then were a blurry, jittery mess.

Soul

Usually depends on the art style used. This goes for essentially any game. Most of the games that tried too hard to look realistic look like complete shit now whereas the more stylized stuff still manages to look good.

I know what you mean. PS2 games are peak aesthetics. Something about it just makes the games look really fucking good to me. No system before nor afterwards gave me the same feeling.

I still remember how blown away i was when i first saw GTA3

Attached: gta-3-screenshot-07.jpg (1920x1080, 1.83M)

yikes.

>pixel shimmering
That’s called a lack of mipmapping which even the N64 supported

woulda been nice if you uploaded a screenshot that didn't use mods

I played this grimdark samurai game as a kid where you start in a village where most people got killed by bandits, then you run up a forest path where a man is blocking the end of the road and demands you to bring something to let you pass, and you go searching for it. I couldn't read what was written in all the prompts back then and the game had hard combat.

Does someone remember what that game is? I'd really love to give it another shot

I've always thought GTA 3 was fucking shit.

But even people that like it weren't blown away when they "saw" its janky ass blocky models and vaseline coated visuals.

it's actually called SOUL soitard

in the PS2 days, games were still good.

God I miss army men games so fucking much

I never thought I'd say something as ugly as Psychonauts has aged well but it really has. I guess stylized art does help you to look good.

No, if you mean the visual design you would be right but there's nothing good about any of those artifacts especially when displayed on an HDTV. Out of all the consoles, PS2's visuals have suffered the most with age. Most of it's games don't support any formats besides the console's minimal standards and that's a problem now. If i could get emulation graphics on the actual hardware i would take that in a heart beat.

>t. Actually playing through Onimusha series in an actual PS2 right now.

I think you are literally thinking of OP's game, Onimusha 2 and remembering parts of it wrong. Is this bait?

There was nothing like it on the Ps1 not even close

On an SDTV? Sure.

I looked up OP's game and it looks extremely familiar, I think it was the game but I do 100% remember some creepy narrow path inside a thick forest, there was nice little details in it such as huge beetles climbing up some of the trees, and at the end of this trail a man blocked an entrance to something, and he wouldn't let me in. I even asked my mom to help me figure it out and she kept playing with me for a few hours before we gave up.

>not playing them at x10 native resolution on an HD monitor

pixel shimmering at 60fps is fucking SOUL

You are 100% remembering Onimusha 2 but forgetting that there was a whole town section between the start in the dead village and the mountain pass. I wouldn't qualify Onimusha 2 as "grimdark" though, it gets pretty silly (in a good way).

What's his name, again?

Here's is the section you are remembering

youtube.com/watch?v=EpyN26pIdWw&t=3m46s

>pixel shimmering at 60 fps
>low resolution pre rendered background on loop
>repeated environment texture
>can't even distinguish player model's face because it's so jittery and blurry
>player model's clothes look as if they are made out of cardboard
>player model's clothing detail is flat and looks as if it were painted on
>voice acting sounds muffled as if actors spoke dialogue into an empty pringles can

ugggghhh SOUL

Games never needed to look any better than PS2-level. That level of graphics was good enough to accomplish anything necessary and cheap enough that even modest devs could afford it.

The fact that OP image had to be pre-rendered on PS2 kind of proves you wrong though

Onimusha 2 has the best looking water in any video game ever. It hasn't been topped to this day.

Is pre-rendered though

It was certainly warm like snes. HD shit is too bright and blurs can't work properly

will Capcom stop being assholes and re-release the other 3 Onimusha's on current gen and PC?

I for one appreciate 480i gaming on a CRT

And is he particularly good at anything?

You sure?

Silent Hill 2 and 3 are still fucking gorgeous today.

bruh

Attached: water.jpg (1000x1000, 187K)

like a pool of thick cum

No, he's right. That was always super impressive but the water in Onimusha 2 is literally real footage of a water that blends perfectly into the pre-rendered backgrounds

I'm playing FF12 TZA right now and while it is a HD remaster, I really like the cleanness of it. I get that a certain sharpness in the models etc does lend to a pleasing aesthetic, even if it inferior on a technical level.

Lego Hobbit looks comfy.

HD remasters of PS2 games are the asbolute worst. The shimmering would soften the edges of the lower poly modeled characters or objects and make it look round and soft.

HD remasters increase anti-aliasing and smooth out the edges making everything look blocky and cardboard and gross. I always go for the original PS2 copy over the remaster.

What's a good website to get PCSX2 Iso's from? emuparadise removed everything

Didn't they basically remake KH in its entirety though

No they didn't.

Check Rutracker, probably doesn't have everything but I got my SMT games from there

Correct, basically all art assets/textures in it are redrawn and any model not in KH2 too got remade.

ps2 has the perfect balance of visual clarity and visual fidelity. modern graphics are too busy and hectic and older grapgics are bit too plain.

They didn't? all games have "link removed" in their entries

Use google. There's something you're not seeing here.

Is that image supposed to prove your point because right looks MUCH better.

you forgot one
youtube.com/watch?v=R1W8KchOJ2w

Yeah, sure.

>ps2 has the perfect balance of visual clarity and visual fidelity

Nigga get a grip, back then PS2 had the worst image quality of the generation, it just happened to have the best games.

It was the original Onimusha, not 2. It was a lot darker than the sequel in tone and recently got a remaster for modern consoles. Check it out.

Nah, i have yet to play 4 so i don't know if it's KINO and i don't want to spoil myself.

No, he is remembering the second one to a T, even down to the beetles on the trees which you can actually pick up and offer to the other characters as a gift.

The PS2/Xbox/GC era games had a lot of pre-rendered hi-rez backgrounds and your characters would just move on them. Honestly that was a pretty smart move and I'm sad games don't really do that anymore.

I meant the 3d aesthetics and the visuals employed by the set limitations. I didnt mean raw image quality and yes 480i isnt that pleasing.

gogadantes, damn i really like onimusha except dawnofdreams

This game really should have been a PS3 launch title.

It looks sharper and cleaner, but if you look at his stomach where the zipper folds inwards, on left it appears rounded due to low res softening, while on right it looks angular and blocky. The difference is even more noticeable in motion.

Same with pic related. It comes down to preference though. Do you prefer a sharper image but more noticeable angles on low poly models, or blurrier image with a softening effect on low poly models? I personally don't care about sharpness on PS2 games and like to play them how they were.

Attached: jak.jpg (1280x720, 152K)

It sold like shit probably because it was only on the PS2 in 2006.
They fucked up.

you didnt post a ps2 screenshot. it looks like ass there. 480i, draw distance is nowhere near that good and I'm pretty sure the cars dont have reflections like in your screenshot

Yes, but I fucking hate the consoles they were on.
480i makes me want to vomit.
I'm holding back buying games until digital video mods start to come forward.

Sounds like the opening to Fable.

this. Fucking can't enjoy my ps2 on bvm since it has too many lines. literally hurts my eyes
