You'll get a lot of "free" requests, entertain them with quick sketches. You will eventually get some requests with money behind them. Establish a set of prices for commissions in advance, make sure you have a common and reliable payment system that works internationally for your shithole, set up a patreon, and make sure you get paid before you give them the finished product.

I'm no mentor; I've just been winging it and picking up tricks for the past six years to get to where I am. But there is one thing - fuck all those "you just have to practice!" hand waving responses.

For real progress:
Browse youtube for and watch hours upon hours of "tricks" and "shortcuts" in drawing, many artists on there often have simple explanations for how you may better visualize an image as you draw it, with quick ways to establish a drawing's form. You want to break down everything in the image into simple shapes so that you can get the proportion and placement right, do that Loomis shit for faces, imagine you're drawing some Playstation 1 or PS2 era 3D model at first.

For the love of fuck, do not use cartoons and anime as reference; if you're going to draw people, search for posing models or maybe even visit /s/. Learn basic anatomy and muscle groups, google that shit. If you know where all of the muscles are going, you can capture the form very well.
Do not think of any tool or material as "cheating", even if you're tracing a 3D model or actual photo. If you have to, trace pictures of real people until you can replicate such things freehand. Draw on-model with reality and THEN exaggerate the features, give them big anime tiddies afterwards.

Iterate, iterate, iterate. Set up the simplest single swooshy lines (exaggerate the "gesture" from the beginning, exaggerate the "form" at the end) to stick figures (with hips and rib cage position established) to the muscle groups to more and more details. Keep adding to the drawing in gradual passes, don't try and add detail from the very start, do NOT "zoom in" until the end.
