I don't know, everything about Mario feels like one of those weird japanese knockoff products that you can't even tell where it came from. From his concept to history with stuff like rebranding Doki Doki Panic to sell it as Mario on the West, it is all just bizarre. Yet, it is somehow one of the most compelling franchises in video games.

What makes Mario and Pokemon so successful is that Nintendo is pretty much the only video game company in the world that has the balls to NOT change and chase every new trend. They've just kept releasing the same 2D platformer with nearly identical gameplay and just new levels and maybe some small gimmicks. Every other major company shifted to FPS games when they got popular, and then to 3rd person shooters after gears of war, and to whatever the flavor of the month is. Only Nintendo just keeps providing the same service year after year.

he used to look better, more natural. especially in sunshine/gamecube era. they're (nintendo) softened him up recetly, has that weird uncanny valley effect where he does't look quite right.
