Western or Eastern characters? Which is better?

Attached: duality of games.png (161x673, 88K)

Definitely not pretentious western characters.

Yep, no one is going to seriously address the image but you are absolutely correct. Has anyone seriously stated that they think the story of Final Fantasy whatever is good? How about Dragon Quest? How about Fire Emblem? How about Kingdom Hearts? I like a lot about Metal Gear Solid, I think Kojima put out a lot of really solid character concepts like The Boss. The story is convoluted GARBAGE. The stories that engage people the most are vague and purposefully empty like the Souls games. My only favorite Japanese game for its story is Silent Hill 2.

Meanwhile you have stuff like Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape: Torment, Deus Ex, VtMB, Fallout 1/2/New Vegas, Morrowind, NWN2, and so on and so on. Even FPS games have really engaging stories like Call of Duty Modern Warfare.

>all modern wrpgs are now open worlds while jrpgs still hittin it

Whenever I see a WRPG vs JRPG discussion, it always begins and ends with how the Protag looks like, doesn't it?

The wrpg arguments always falls flat when you start to realize half the shit they spout is some weird obsessive affirmation about their heterosexuality and any good points they bring up is hollow when it goes back to "Yeah! And Squall looks like a faggot!!" to no one who cares. Since I have never met a gay man in my like who looked like cloud but have met plenty who looked like the nameless one, I find this point to be disingenuous yet its the one this argument tend to hover around.

Either ita a massive jealosy about the mc being better looking then them, (which if it is, congratulation! You're a bluehaired cat lady) or some surpression of their own homosexual desires.

Op, pic related, its you.

Attached: 1520713260033.jpg (540x500, 45K)

Agreed on all of those but one. I have to shill for Fire Emblem, though. The stories often are generic, but the characters are often unique, even when they do fall neatly into an archetype. As for the ones where the story isn't "blue-haired prince and gang saves the day by killing a dragon," they often have better stories (i.e. Radiant Dawn)

>entry level jRPGs vs enthusiast wRPGs
no wRPG has a story as good as xenogears

Odd, those are the games you've played yet none of those appeared in your original post.

>played all of these
>didn’t like them
Nigga what are you doing maybe the genre isn’t for you

You have played none of those.

True but nip games that pander to the west are superior to western games. You get the best of both worlds, good gameplay from Japs and good writing/narrative from the west.

Because the ones I've mentioned are the most popular of both JRPG and CRPGs? I didn't mention literally anything that is niche.

Also I do mention Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid. I also wouldn't call the story of Wild Arms, Radiant Historia, Illusions of Gaia, any of the Persona games or Xeno games particularly better than western games either.

Western games style themselves after literature, pen and paper, or Hollywood. JRPGs just have developers writing out the story based on what they think is cool which is how you get guys like Kojima who become both gameplay and story directors.

Okay, so lets dissect what you just fuckimg said right there faggot. Lets do compare.

Y'all say "jrpgs use the same story over and over and over again", right? Got it so lets compare some games from the wrpg renaissance on the xbox 360 to the jrpg boom on the ps1. Lets compare the plots

> parasite eve: a cop on the tail of a genetic creature controlling mitochondria and creating hellbeasts

>xenogears: a science fantasy allegory of genesis with a PTSD main character.

>brave fencer musashi: a colorful adventure where a legendary samurai gets sucked into a medieval world with food and soda themed characters.

To

>fallout 3: find your dad in mad max

>skyrim: fuck up those dragons in norway

>dragon age: origins: fuck up those dragons in middle-earth/westoros.

I'm not even going into characters, plotting, game mechanics, and what-not.

I didn't say I don't like JRPGs. I have NEVER once stated that. I just said that western games have better stories. I still enjoy plenty about JRPGs and how ridiculous they are. Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my favorite games.

You can enjoy two movies and say one movie is better than the other.

if you were familiar with those games, then you would know that xenogears's story is revered more than any wRPG while xenoblade's is revered more than any modern wRPG aside from witcher being the only competition

what's the third game on the left?

Skyrim
Divinity original sin 2

>if you were familiar with those games, then you would know that xenogears's story is revered more than any wRPG
oh please lmao, this is an opinion held by maybe a handful of people who have any serious interest in both western and japanese RPGs

>only good ones are the ones that pander to western audiences
no, western audiences only care about surface level aspects. Take for example these two titles

>top
>combat is brainlessly holding O
>cannot die due to the fact you can use essentially limitless items at all times with no cooldown
>magic consists of nukes that don't take any strategy to use, limited but can easily be made back around frequent campsites
>side quests involve boring fetch quests
>considered a huge disappointment, one of the worst in its series

>bottom
>combat consist of a braindead single click on an enemy
>cannot die due to the fact you can use essentially limitless items at all times with no cooldown
>magic consists of nukes that don't take any strategy to use, limited but can easily be made back around frequent rest sites
>side quests involve boring fetch quests
>considered one of the greatest wRPGs of all time

the standards for wRPGs are lower and the only people that praise wRPGs are those who played them as children and are blinded by nostalgia. This is why there are people who go back to play classic jRPGs despite not playing them as kids yet after one or two wRPGs they drop the genre (especially the horrid cRPG subgenre)

Attached: ffxv planescape.png (797x902, 1.38M)

I am really doubting the validity of your staments because you think nobody has ever praised a final fantasy story and then say fft is your fqvorite which is well regarded for its story.

the one that doesn't speak entirely from a poorly written millenia old series of books bordering on fanfic. jesus was the ultimate mary sue.

I think the FFT story is... fine? It's nothing amazing. Certainly not as good as any decent western RPG.

I guarantee you xenogears has more demand for a remake than any wRPG, especially shitty ass cRPGs like planescape

wRPGs are trash and he's an idiot, but there are plenty of morons who praise FF's stories because of nostalgia despite the entire series having shit stories. Ironically FF14 has the best story of them all and one of the best gameplay mechanics yet a lot of FFtards refuse to play it.

imagine ever playing western shit

>combat is the defining aspect of a RPG
you LITERALLY spell out the problem. You have it right there, what is the ONE thing missing from your comparison? Story. One is considered the best wRPG because it has a fantastic story. The other is convoluted bullshit.

Wow, solved your little conundrum there.

I assume it is vtmb

this is why wRPGs, especially cRPGs, are dead. I bet you talk shit to VNiggers

Then why is Bloodlines getting a sequel, Baldur's Gate getting a sequel, and other CRPGs are getting spiritual successors through Kickstarter while Xenogears has been absolutely bastradized with its successors?

I have been saying that literally this entire thread while you weeb keep putting words in my mouth. BY ITSELF, western RPGs have better stories. That's it. That's my only statement. That's the only thing I am asserting and defending.

as trash as FFXV was at least it had its own mythos

the gameplay in the xenoblade titles far exceeds any wRPG, this goes for both combat and exploration. It's actually the anti-wRPG in how it improved as a video game without making concessions for story, wRPGs still can't get basic gameplay down right. This isn't limited to xenoblade either, the souls series, Ys, SMT, world ends with you are some games that also fit the gameplay bill

as for why those games are getting sequels, the companies decided to bring out another title after years of discounts, they will most likely bomb as, surprise, they are shit. The only modern cRPG that didn't bomb is OS2, which is considered "the best" and hardly sold over a million. Funny how you paint those as successes while trying to paint Xeno as a failure, it'll be a miracle if any of those games have a world as good as XCX or combat as good as XC2

this is nothing compared to P:T and it still has recency bias that will go away once the next title comes out (XIII had the same spiel and look where it's at now)

>those as successes while trying to paint Xeno as a failure
lmao again with more words being put in my mouth. I never said this. I never even implied this. I said that no one is trying to remake xenogears and that its successors are trying to stray as far away from it as possible in terms of story and gameplay.

western games just pander to sjw whales with mental illness haircuts, so what?

I believe I mentioned exploration? Side quests arn't very good in xenoblade but lets not pretend cRPGs, especially P:T which is being discussed, had it good either.

>successors are trying to stray as far away from it as possible in terms of story and gameplay.
the most recent game, XC2, is the closest to xenogears story wise. Moving away from xenogears's gameplay is a good thing, it's something wRPGs should have done years ago since classic wRPGs play like cancer

Attached: 1cTybvD[1].jpg (2792x1770, 824K)

>XC2 is the closest to xenogears story wise
I guarantee you that no one that isn't a colossal weeb thinks that XC2's story is in any way comparable to that of say Fallout 2 or Kotor 2

>tfw you live in a timelime where PS:T exists

Fou-Lu from Breath of Fire IV is my favorite antagonist from any jrpg. You follow him from the beginning of the game, just like the protagonoist. He's an ancient being that has awoken after thousands of years from sleep to see the once thriving and peaceful empire he created is now a war mongering tyrant. He goes out to try to destroy the empire he dedicated his life too only to be hunted by members of it that anticipated his return. At every opportunity where he sees humans are not entirely terrible he is faced by worst and worst events. This culminates in a woman who saved him being used as ammunition by a weapon intended to kill him. This ultimately results in him losing complete faith in humanity and deciding that total destruction is the only fate they deserve.

the villain that directly caused and orchestrated all of his suffering ultimately goes free.

Obviously I don't type this thinking it will change that guy's mind, but more just to show that the genre does have some interesting characters.

>xenoblade chronicles 2

You have to play the game to find it out, don't wanna spoil any shit.

I don't believe you considering you think xc2 combat is good

It's a great twist but honestly as I look I feel they could have done it better. Straybow's betrayl felt real sudden and the princess killing herself felt a little hammy. Not to say Orested isn't a great antagonist though.

Xenoblade is trash, but even it seems good compared to most WRPGs.

go ahead, tell me a wRPG with better combat. Here is what they're competing against:

enviornmental hazards are in play, blade combos (which create seals to block off tributes/moves) and driver combos (incapacitate/burst damage) combine to create fusion combos which increase the effects of both combo paths and apply bonuses, such as extra party gauge, increased special build up, etc. Then you have other things to consider; positioning, pouch items, type of enemy, elemental weakness/resistance are some of those. On top of this, the game has a canceling mechanic that requires proper timing to boost specials and arts. Behind the scenes, characters are completely customizable with different blades that change stats, classes, abilities, passives, and certain ones have special prioritizes which change up how the game work (e.g. corsette brings a new dynamic to potion collection which increases fusion combo damage, an extra incentive to give up positioning to collect potions rather than just health). I havn't even gone over additional mechanics like just range, elements or affinity, the latter which intertwines narrative elements into gameplay, something further emphasized with the DLC in terms of blade partnership vs ownership.

>wRPGfags will never know the feeling of stacking combos and timing a level 3's invulnerability frames to negate a party devastating AoE into a chain attack with 4 orbs build up into a full burst
maybe if wRPGs had good gameplay they wouldn't all be dead aside from shit eating normies who buy TES

I'm mostly a JPRG guy (and Japanese games in general, but even more so with RPGs)

JPRGs on the whole are just better, in my opinion. Gameplay wise, whether it be turn based, strategy, action, or something else, there usually feels like a lot of work is put into the good ones. Games like SMT, Chrono Trigger, Disgaea or Ys are all really fun just to experience the combat. Western RPGs usually play pretty rough, the turn-based combat in most crpgs is unrefined and leaves a lot to be desired, and the action games don't hold a candle to pure action games (JRPGs don't either, Ys or Kotor can't compare to Bayonetta, but Ys feels a lot more fun). Visually, jrpgs go for more interesting art directions and styles more often, anime gets boring, but SMT looks different than Dragon Quest, which looks different to Etrain Odyssey. Western RPGs usually go for a pseudo realism, and some games can have cool looking worlds, a lot of them fail to impress. (Ultima, Witcher, all just generic looking fantasy). Music wise, jrpg music is a classic genre of video game music, while most wrpgs have fairly bland, forgettable songs or lack music almost altogether.

As for the story and RPG mechanics therein, often times they're way more in depth in wrpgs, and offer more freedom. But the complete package of jrpgs is just better in my opinion, and most wrpgs only succeed in one category.

>xenoblade 2 is similiar to xenogears

when earlier it was stated that
>xenogears's story is revered more than any wRPG

So yeah, the logic works out perfectly fine

context is you said the xeno series is straying further from gears storywise, blade 2 proves that wrong

>He's an ancient being that has awoken after thousands of years from sleep
>He goes out to try to destroy the empire
>Deciding that total destruction is the only fate they deserve
sigh, yet another JRPG baddie

Ok fine, sure, i'll just go with you saying that Xenogears is closed to Xenoblade 2. But now you are saying Xenoblade 2 is more revered than most wRPGs, considering Xenogears, which it is apparently very similiar to, is also more revered than many wRPGs.

In linking all these statements, I believe that is fucking ridiculous and that NO ONE thinks Xenoblade 2 is remotely comparable in terms of characters or story to ANY good wRPG.

xenoblade 2 being closer to xenogears than the rest of the xeno series storywise isn't saying xenoblade 2 is more revered than most wRPGs (although it is revered more than most wRPGs just not a bunch of the top ones), you are operating on a logical fallacy

I kind of agreed with op, but the thing is that modern JRPG's are ment for wider audience. I never said xenoblade 2's story was a similar quality, xenogears's is a lot better (it's also a lot better than any wRPG for that matter), I just said it's the closest to it of all the games in the series

>persona and XC2 have less complex plots than SMT and XC1/X
of all the retarded shit ITT this one might take the cake

ah yes the enlightened centrist go fuck yourself

so its quality is so distanced enough that it can't be said that it is better than most wRPGs, like its predecessor Xenogears, however you would still call it the closest in the series which is now a bunk comparison because you can't even state the QUALITY of the story which is clearly what was being argued this whole time

I think you need to brush up on the quote chain, XC2 being closer to xenogears storywise is a response to a supposed lack of continued legacy, the entire quality aspect of XC2 is a focus on gameplay
