The rebuilds are visually gorgeous, have phenomenal sound tracks, but a plot that flies off the rails.

1.11 is, by and large, a vastly improved version of episodes 1-8.
2.22 is where things start to really deviate. A new character is introduced, the angels are different, and Zeruel becomes some of the hypest shit you'll ever witness.
Then 3.33 happens. You quickly find out that the post credit preview from 2.22 was basically a giant fucking lie and there's virtually no segue between the two. You have no clue what's going on and neither does shinji. Everyone walks out of the theater pissed as hell and wondering how the hell 4.0 will salvage it.

Everyone has daddy problems (except Asuka, who has mommy problems and a daddy complex) and their development can be summed by having mental breakdowns over others being assholes, thus causing more mental breakdowns in turn.

The show is a play on the Mecha Genre, the first episode literally sets you up with standard tropes. A kid is brought into a alien situation or environment, bad things start happening, and he is forced to pilot the robot.

The first episode is literally episode 1 of Gundam 0079, but replace Zaku's with a giant monster. Your set up to think, hey look this kids going to save the day and everything is going to be great.

The difference being is the show in episode 2 does the exact opposite of what every mech show in the era practically led you to expect. Shinji gets in the robot, fails horribly ending up in a hospital with no memory, and basically only survives because the damn thing acts of its own free will to survive and ends up exposing that its in fact a living breathing thing buried under a bunch armor and constraints.

The rest of the show is more of the same concept, take a trope and expectation, now break that expectation and do horrible things to the characters and actually treat them like normal humans who drop the ball in high pressure situations constantly.
