Dude, Half Life 2 fucking sucks, especially by today's standards. Tons of unskippable cutscenes that force you to wait for an NPC to open a door, mediocre gunplay (and mediocre guns in general), shit final boss, and overall poor level design that feels almost completely on rails. The only good bits of HL2 are Ravenholm and the Gravity Gun.

Oh, and to add to this, the first Half Life is far better than HL2 could ever dream of being.

It's not contrarian, it's true. Half Life 1 doesn't waste your time with locked doors only NPC's can open after they spout their dialogue. Unlike Half Life 2, it tells it's story without interrupting gameplay (for the most part). The levels are also far more open than Half Life 2. It has better feeling guns. Even the starting pistol feels better than half the weapons in HL2.

Are you trying to say that the story in Half Life 2 is worth interrupting gameplay? Cuz it isn't. The story is standard and boring. The lore of HL2 is better than its story, which isn't exactly a good thing.

And besides that, Half Life 2 isn't an RPG, it's a first person shooter. Bogging the FPS gameplay down with multiple sections where you're standing around for 5 minutes waiting for the story to stop telling itself is bad game design.

I like the environments and enemies in HL1 more and it has cooler guns.
HL2 has better characters and story, though, with gameplay good enough to still make it enjoyable.

I played them both on release and while HL1 is great initially with the facility ruins and everything, it doesn't even come close to the atmosphere of HL2. HL2 is just so much more alive than the first one.

hell, i'm sure most of the people arguing in this thread haven't even played the game and are just talking for what they have read or seen on a youtube video.
real talk, just play it, is dirt cheap or you can just pirate it, is not that long (you can play hl1 + expansions, hl2+ episodes, portal and portal 2 in less than 30 hours without any previous knowledge) and you can have your own opinion if is a good or a bad game.
