California requires literally anything that may have any risk- no matter how seemingly small - of cancer to be marked as such. In theory this is good, as the plaques they put up can have important information. In practice, companies turned them into a joke by putting them EVERYWHERE. The plastic on that headset may cause cancer if ingested, or if melted and the fumes inhaled.

California's legislators can't devote time to real issues because they either involve passing laws that single issue voters would crucify them over, or would result in a gigantic collapse of their economy.

So they busy themselves with a bunch of feel good bullshit optics and never deal with the underlying issues. They are in deep shit (sometimes literally) because the poor are subjected to absurd population density and unsustainable land valuation in a quickly encroaching desert. There's no drug enforcement or immigration enforcement which together with the inescapable poverty, result in gangs, drugs, human trafficking, disease and addiction.

The elite live in their gilded towers with the protection of the law while the plebs below them wast and starve, because the dream of the high life is too enticing.

It doesn't help that Google, Apple, and the American branches of Chinese/Taiwanese electronics manufacturers/distributors control essentially all of the campaign funding. Add to that the fact that elections aren't even contested by differing viewpoints, but instead by which Democrat looks the most appealing to a given ethnic constituency.
California today is the closest to Cyberpunk we'll ever see. Worse even, because Cyberpunk at least has cool bio-technologies.
