I would also argue that the fanservice is an integral part of the gameplay experience of DOAX 3, and the PS4 version has had several elements removed or censored. Even broadening our perspective, we could say that the modern culture of censorship and "ethical" games caused the entire game to be censored in the West since the publisher just didn't want to subject themselves to that bullshit.

Regardless of the effect on gameplay, why should they be censored? Take for instance a breast size slider or a sexy outfit. If these things are optional and not at all necessary, if people don't want to see them, they don't have to. First they censor something you agree that should be censored, then they start censoring stuff you sort of agree with but you know, its not that big of a deal. But the ball keeps on rolling and rolling until the people that are censoring things start to realize that they can censor whatever they want because they believe it should be, regardless of how many people disagree. Censoring can easily lead to thought policing.

I've always wondered, do games actually have to be approved by the ESRB for retail release? I could have sworn that it's just that brick and motar stores refuse to sell games not rated by the ESRB. But if they really wanted to, they could sell unrated games.

I wasn't willing to call that censorship myself at first, but with Square admitting a few days ago that aspects of her redesign were edicts from the ethics department, that now qualifies.
