You gather enough stuff so you can build a mining ship. You then build a docking platform to deposit ores and stuff automatically, then you go further by creating a system that will take all those ores you mined, place them into furnaces and sends the ingots to a crate that then feeds into multiple assemblers that work cooperatively to create stuff at lightning speed.
I was pretty disappointed with their "out of early access" update, not a lot has changed compared to years ago when I played. Survival just consists of having energy and oxygen, if you have those you could pretty much survive for a very long time since threats are barely existent in the form random pirate ships. It's pretty fucking shitty as the only reason to play survival is to progress to get more technology and better ships, but if gathering is too boring, might as well just play creative.

Members of the best performing teams have a chance to get games from their wishlist (I think it was top 3). You help your team by spending points which you get from buying games or by completing specific things in games that are shown on that store page (just click the gigantic banner at the top with race cars).
No you don't get free games (unless you have a shit ton of luck and get drawn for them), but for 15k points you can get a 5€ off of your next purchase or just spend those points on profile badges, backgrounds and emoticons if you're into that.

Creative is how you play. I've tried multiplayer survival multiple times now and it's a shitty grindfest getting a miner, then a welder, then a combat ship that will never see an enemy because the other players are too busy talking themselves up while hiding from everyone else. Eventually your ship runs out of uranium or you hit an astroid and lose literal days worth of work.

NPCs are all in space. They're pathetic and the loot sucks.
