His designs for RBY, FRLG and LGPE are just different takes on the same age. In SM he's an adult, so that's why his appearance is so radically different there.

Pokemon Masters might be somewhere between those two timeframes. He looks like he's 15 or 16 in that depiction.

The visual design for SM was good but his actual character was fucking stupid. They made him silent in G/S as a callback to him being the protagonist in a game where the protagonist doesn't speak. That carried forward into future gens, but in SM they made his muteness into an autistic character trait that Blue makes fun of him for. It was awkward and stupid and makes him come across as a joke

No there's some alt universe douchery going on. According to Let's GO Sun/Moon only take place acouple years after that game (So around the time Gold/Silver would be happening) but at the same time this is AFTER the original Pokemon Emerald as a character from that game appears in Sun and Moon.

I've always liked the wordless, determined Red design from Gen II/IV. I don't really care whether the sleeves are white or black, though I think the black looks better to signify his growth in age and as a Champion/Trainer.

I do wish they gave the S/M design a jacket, and I really don't like the new Masters design. The sleeveless long coat doesn't fit.

I really like how Ash's normal outfit in the SM series follows the philosophy behind his original Indigo League outfit; Basically the male game protagonist's outfit, but with some color changes here and there. Prior to SM all his post-IL outfits were only loosely based on that region's male protagonist, with XYZ being the closest but still pretty far.

The art was basically the preview image for the statue (and was used in designing it). They came together. If I remember right Hitoshi Ariga drew/designed it.
