Playing through this game recently and I think the best thing it does is making you feel like a commander engaging with and managing an army and the series would do well to lean into that more.

The story in 4 however is so amazingly abysmal, everything about the setting and premise serves only as window dressing to tell a childhood friend story and it doesn't take advantage of anything really. Times where it seems like them being in the military (like with Kai's betrayal) would play a role in how they handle a situation ends up being kicked to the curb with "Oh lol she's our friend it's all good".

Not to mention 4 games in and I honestly don't think the supernatural aspect of the series makes it better in any way. It ranges from inoffensive to just outright bad and it doesn't make the series unique among JRPG's either.

I got it for the switch, and it runs like shit. There's a four second pause before the start of any dialogue in battle, the frame-rate regularly drops below 30, and the graphics aren't done justice. At least I got that sweet Ragnarok controller sticker.

are you playing handheld or dock mode? I'm playing dock mode on the switch and never had any issues.

First game only sold well after price redcutions.
PC version sold well at a reduced launch price.
The franchise was never truly successful even at its best.

It's fucking BORING to play the story missions. Once again they actively punish exploration and thorough enemy killing by essentially grading on speed alone. That plus 99% of missions being "hurr scout rush the bases" fluff make most of the map pointless to explore and your primary goal repetitive as fuck.

I kinda hope some other developer just shamelessly rips off the core gameplay and does something better with it, because it has a solid foundation that's simply squandered by unimaginative design.

Docked, mostly. When a character runs into a space that triggers dialogue boxes, its model freezes for several seconds until the dialogue beings. Rain and other effects still happen. I haven't ran into anything that made me quit playing, but just a lot of annoyances.

Valkyria Revolution was so bad it hurt the brand and no game afterward was going to match the success the first had after losing that amount of goodwill.

I don't know what they were thinking with Revolution. I bought it because despite all the bad jap reviews I figured that I of all people could wring some enjoyment out of it.

All the characters were walking tropes, the plot was really bad, the game was terribly balanced. And something about pressing a button once and getting a 3 hit combo broke something essential in my mind and I couldn't stop thinking about it 3 months later.
Also I'm a boob man. I love boobs. But those things were way too fucking huge on Brunhilde. And never in my life ever would I ever think I would say some onions shit like that ever.

Yeah this is what's stopped me from actually liking this series, the fact that the only thing that matters is how fast your single scout can take everything plus the time crunch preventing you from wanting to even try doing anything else.
