I play it for the unlocks! But the story can be fun (see disgaea 1 and 3) or shit (5). I like to grow attached to the characters if they’re any good.

Best story varies. The story I got most invested in was 1 and 5. The characters I like the most are 4.
Also reminder Disgaea 4 Complete+ is gonna be a thing this year, fuck yes.
Minor balance changes and some classes are changed visually.
Get PC if you don't care about it being pretty. It's considerably cheaper and the changes are not worth the difference in price.
"Disgaea Complete" kind of sounds like a collection to be fair.

PC version has some DLC from the PSP version that's not in the HD version, and some enemy types have completely different sprites in the HD version simply because those enemy types didn't have HD sprites from other games they could re-use.

Alright I'll just get the PC version then.
But it looks like on Complete it also has those DLC characters in it plus some others like Asagi.
I know on PC there is a mod that also adds additional characters including Asagi, is there any real difference when doing that?

Not really, but the portability is really nice, plus the patches have added a lot of quality of life stuff. Healers no longer need to kill to level up for instance
