I can objectively explain to you why 1st gen pokemon are the best. It's because they are actually inspired by nature, they have a great variety of ideas and because they have a slight realism to them because of their inspiration from nature. They also incorporate a lot of universal concepts like hypnsosis, psychokineses, four elements, dragons and other kinda natural "themes". What makes 1st gen great is that they are grounded in existing concepts. And the concept of each pokemon is very specific and distinguishable.
Other gens are just random abstract bullshit. Sorry, but the only thing good about them is that they are "unique", but hey everything is unique when you smash random shit together.

Didn't read OP because I haven't finished the story yet and I can feel it's probably some huge spoiler about the best character.

Sucks cause I really enjoy the story (altho it's predictable) and the characters but the turn based although it's solid just puts me to sleep after a while so I can only progress in small increments everyday.

Currently doing the painter arc, and Monamona being the best character I'm really curious to learn what her deal is, which is the sole reason why I will try and finish this game eventually. Because save for the combat it's 10/10 everything else, especially the music.
