Sakura maybe? can't really remember, I guess it was more reading the comic, but I went out of my way to play Alpha 2 just cause she was in it, most of the time a cute design isn't enough to pick up a game specifically for any one character, more like it's just if the game has cute characters i'll be interested, and something like Nier Automata I guess where they're cute and the main character in a game that only has a couple characters, JRPGs ussually aren't worth running after just for a single character since they're only a small part of the game.

Arguably more so than any other feature once a baseline play-ability and minimal level of enjoy-ability is reached.

If the MC was a male, yes, it would have bombed. There would be nothing to hold it all together without the girls. It simply wasn't a unique experience. That's not to say it was bad. She really made an impression on me when I was playing through PXZ, I really liked her character and theme and how she went well with Frank, it just made the entire experience a lot more fun. Although, I only played about 30 minutes of Darkstalkers since I fucking suck at fighting games. I apparently owned it on PS3 and didn't even know.
It's a shame there seems to be a lot of lore behind each character in PXZ and many of them are interesting but are part of fighting games where some don't even have stories or have a long line of games that are just kinda hard to get into. I'd love to go through Darkstalkers, Cyberbots, Virtua Fighter and such but idk if any of them have stories to them or how many games are in the series.
Also Felicia's theme in PXZ2 makes me chuckle at how stupid it sounds, I love it but man it's so baffling why they thought having random cat meows sounded good.
