Only once, but we do see multiple up specials and the same animation for what's likely a down special twice with different attacks. The hero is his own custom move list.

It shows up with different skills on it in the trailer and spells/abilities from DQ that aren't on the menu also clearly get used but no one is sure how any of it works. For example maybe his different specials bring up different menus, Maybe his up special just always uses zoom and his down special always uses Kaclang, we just don't know.

We have seen it twice, yes. Once in the trailer and another in screenshot. Some moves used in the trailer though do not have the same command style though. Frizz, Zap and Woosh don't seem to be part of the command list and they are chargable. While the command list is it's own special and contains a list of four random spells and they cost MP, but can be game changers.

This, he even said at the start that Nintendo provided him a list of characters that he COULD choose and had to work within this limited selection. The Hero, Banjo and Joker were on this list. Sakurai felt that these were the best to chose.

I doubt that Sony would ever play ball, and can't imagine that Rockstar would allow him to use a GTA or Red Dead character in Smash, not that I think he would ever ask. And probably some companies that would be willing to collaborate, like Activision Blizzard for example, would probably end up being a nightmare to work with.

In terms of specific characters, even among companies that would otherwise be willing to work with him, he couldn't just throw out any name he wanted - I don't think Square Enix would let him use some random character like Auron , or even if he went to Namco asking for Valkyrie. I think at a certain point, even Nintendo would try to reel him in if he was going to choices too bizarre. 4 mechanically had the most interesting additions. Literally 4 had the most soulful and inspired additions to the roster. Every new character in 4 had a very unique moveset and a special gimmick that made them feel different from any other addition. Sakurai unironically has a bias against western devs. It's not even in a intentional or hateful way, but rather he much rather help the Japanese economy.

He was talking about "influence and legacy", which I take to encompass both of those things and more. Pokemon itself lifts a lot of inspiration from Dragon Quest, right down to Sugimori's early art clearly taking cues from 90s Akira Toriyama.

They typically don't redub characters who only have grunts but no actual lines. In the first half of the Japanese trailer for the Hero he calls out the names of his specials. If those lines are in the final game they'll have to either be redubbed or cut because the names of the spells are completely different between the two languages. Though I wouldn't be surprised if they went with the latter.

Just because you like Banjo more, doesn't mean you should be so damn daft about DQ. DQ is a huge fucking deal to Japan. Without the loud diehards, Banjo has nothing left. Meanwhile DQ has a massive, ongoing legacy to this day.

Jrpg is inevitable. It's a shit abstraction of tabletop gaming. Walking around a map and using a menu isn't super innovative. DQ is indicative of everything wrong with Japan. It's a stagnant franchise mired in the past and so chained to tradition it can't risk innovating.
