I usually do it like this
Early rounds buy the best heroes that show up (usually the most expansive ones)
Focus on upgrading them and buying ones that have sinergy with them, once they're upgrade to two stars don't get any more (getting 3 stars is quite hard I've found, not worth trying early)
On later rounds build around the best synergy you got

they will pull an EA and make it pay to win
then they will make it the main game mode
then they will stop supporting summoners rift
then they will remove it
and the game will be renamed to team fight tactics

While it is true that game knowledge, proper studying of the opponets draft, good positioning and intelligent, non greedy picks will guarantee you to get in the endgame and reach the podium every game, it is also true that if you get fucked by RNG it's simply impossible to get first place, and games where playing perfectly can still be lost because the opponet gets the god hand are, in the end, trash.
