I got the black knight sword on both my first playthroughs of darksouls. I didnt even know that there was only a 25% chance of getting it. Its infinitely superior to every weapon until late game. Like post anor londo. 3rd play through it didnt drop the sword and I thought the game was broken, but I got the black knight greatsword and just shrugged it off.
Claymore isnt as good as bks until ng+.

I get they were a little too strong at launch but what was up with them dropping the casts down to like 2 or 3? They became nearly useless for pve even though faith already had limited offensive spells.

I remember having a ng+ level 40ish BKS build with Black iron armor set. I sat in the forest and invaded/ got invaded for hours on end.

That running r1 spin attack is an amazing opener against scrubs and even knocks them down, setting you up for a slow r2, or you stunlock them with r1 for days.

I had millions of souls. I think that character had the most souls of any of mine across all the games.

I had no idea what the game was but I was hooked and played the shit out of it. Eventually he came home and took his games back, and I couldn't find a copy of DeS to buy for myself anywhere.

I just love the fact that a lot of the beast weapons in DaS are available really early on, like the zwei, claymore, winged spear, halberd, long sword, etc. I've always despised loot-centric equipment mechanics like in skyrim where it's just a matter of stats and you feel the need to constantly "upgrade" to the later-game equivalents as you progress.

Honorfags are the biggest hypocrites because they'll run to their Estus or use a summon if shit goes south, or otherwise bust out their cosplay-breaking WotG in a second and spam it as a crutch.

I finally decided to just plain fight someone, and if they just so happened to actually use "honor" rules I'd sometimes humor them. If someone bowed or gestured I'd nail them right with a Lloyd's Talisman, if I hadn't already thrown it.

Finally upgrading from 30 Vitality was one of the best decisions I ever made. I wasn't nearly as fucked over from key lag hits or a summon dealing damage before they'd even loaded in yet.

Its the only way to play the game, trying to make people play by rules is dumb, and if they want to they can play with each other instead of being open for invasions.

Not a similar game at all, but in Oldschool Runescape there's a similar split in the playerbase of people who play by "rules" which include things like not using damage reducing prayers or eating to full HP. Then there are the no honor chads who just try to kill each other with no rules other than the obvious no third party software.

Same. The entire appeal of Souls' unique asymmetric multiplayer is in the thrill of the hunt as an invader, and the panic in trying to go through a world and getting invaded. I lived for that shit. If I just wanted a duel, I'd go play a fighting game or something like that.

I don't mind duelfags existing, but it's really a shame that they got a lot of the focus in subsequent games. IMO DaS2's PVP was absolutely ruined by its over-reliance on those shitty arenas and requiring players grind for cracked orbs if they want to fight anywhere else. And to an extent the same goes for DaS3, where they have the matchmaking duel bullshit while totally gutting the mechanics of PVP invasions and making it tedious garbage.

In DaS1 I didn't even mind regardless because estus sipping was balanced, and you couldn't just chug to victory or you'd get your shit wrecked with backstabs. But in DaS3 they ruined this by letting you chug with impunity and regenerating estus upon kills, meaning every fight was a tiresome war of attrition, and that's just not fun at all. And also fuck DaS3's retarded infinite-rollspam bullshit too.

The thing that made me finally decide they were faggots was when the same behaviors happened via the Red Sign Soapstone. That thing's item description even notes that it's for the more honorable path, yet the moment the bows were done they'd guzzle Estus like wimps or haul ass to a summon. I'd also get bitched at if I healed first with anything.

The "honorable 1 vs. 1" mentality and everything that cultivated it, even if just to troll it with twinks, were probably some of the worst things for the game. It encouraged everyone to limit themselves and play worse.

The Estus chugs were still too strong in Dark Souls 1. They happened quickly and did immense healing per sip, and hosts could have up to 20. Add in the flaky netcode and you could have someone who escaped a backstab or otherwise had a buffer from being punished in general, especially if there were summons involved. The Estus even healed the summons to boot, so the host often didn't even have to fight and everything was just an obnoxious one-sided battle of attrition.

That's nothing compared to the issue in DaS3 where sipping is so quick you can't even punish it with a backstab unless you'r right on top of them. In DaS1 you at least had to be tactical and find a way to get some distance between you and the opponent before you could sip without just getting backstabbed and having all that health discarded.

And also invaders at least had humanity to heal with. Which was also balanced since it took a long time to pull off. But it was still absolutely necessary to prevent campers from just being able to pick you off with chip damage from bows/knives/whatever,.

After the dlc, vanilla boss become pathetic in comparison.

Well, let's be more realistic. If you're playing in the intended order, you can still level up a weapon pretty fast. Probably just before the gargoyles, or just after. Depending on how you spend your sound. New players aren't savvy enough to just buy the shards, because they always assume levelling is better.

No, it's supposed to be like a mini estoc. A sword with an unsharpened edge meant to be used like a spike to poke through weak points in an enemy's suits of armor.

Playing naturally, you'll probably only find enough shards to level 1-3 times. As you can go without a shard drop until the big mace knight's 100% shard drop. Any more shard drops than that one, is pretty high luck. So in order to upgrade to a +5 right away, you'll need to buy shards, or grind for them.

Most of the decent weapons were only unlocked in anal rodeo with the giant blacksmith, or if you got lucky and dropped something good from the blackknights.
Not that I would use drake sword anyway, fireclub was good enough to carry me until I could unlock soul boss weapons in anal land.

On a normal build, yes.
On my low level faggot invading build, I prefer to just use the dragonslayer swordspear, min-max for the requirements, and using the weapon art on parry spamming try-hards.
The timing on the weapon art is great if you land a few light attacks, and cast it right when they start panick rolling away.

I didn't heal at all. If I healed after they did they'd bitch at me on PSN and say an invader isn't supposed to do that. They'd also bitch if I healed after they ran for a summon.

Lloyd's Talisman is really clunky and the netcode can also delay its activation and incorrectly tell you it's still active when it's not. The item does nothing to summons either, and the Humanity is slow as hell. Plus, the host has it too, but they can have two other people covering their asses while they try it.

Oddly enough for Dark Souls 1, the weapon that got me through the toughest boss fights towards the end of the game and the final boss was an enchanced crystal halberd. It did not even break despite it being described as fragile.

It was even better than fully enhanced lightning spear and winged spear I had.

Also, a bow and arrow really makes things easier especially for walking on the invisible path to fight the crystal monster.

Prettiest one too.

Sorcerer here, the only melee weapon I use is Moonlight Butterflyhorn in Dark Souls I, and MLGS in all the rest. Are the black knight weapons really that great?

It's actually an ULTRA Greatsword with the lowest weight ever. You get the benefits of big hyper armor, none of the weight issues and very good damage. Literally fucking busted weapon. Plus it looks fucking beautiful.

They fall off at higher levels, but are great from early to mid game because of high base damage + abundance of twinkling titanite, and not needing embers to upgrade them

the damage is a lot lower to reflect its weight, but the amount of times I've got my 2 hit combo, then followed up with an immediate charge to finish off a host that rollspammed away to chug estus makes it worth it. some of the only fun i had with das3

god, they should have at least gave it int scaling or something after nerfing the glitch. it was so fun and cool looking.

To protect the enemy's sword from sliding down your blade and slicing your arm off. Just because the sword is long doesn't mean other swords can't slide down it. Any sword (and even spear) should have a crossguard.

I think you fail to see the issue with OP pic. the cross guard is reversed. that isn't stopping shit. if a blow from an opponents sword comes in it will slide off the cross guard and end up in the wielder's arm, leg, or worse

Cheesing a game ≠ playing it

Greatswords and UGS are the real easy mode of dark souls. Biggest reach (even spears have lower reach), big damage, it staggers everything, its horizontal hitboxes are so big you you dont even need to aim.

People shit on longsword and call them the "best" universal spam weapons, but they are actually horrible in most situations if you compare them to ugs. With ugs it takes few swings to kill anything. One hit and you stagger the mobs and then you just seing again to finish them. Longswords never stagger anything so you actually have to learn timings for rolls / blocks for every single enemy.

It's still pretty fun there's also a private server available for it as well that has pretty good traffic on the weekends.

My only complaint is there are still some bugs/slow downs in certain areas that are kind of annoying but vanilla DaS1 still suffers from it as well.

DeS still holds up. Its quite different from. Dark Souls, enough to be entertaining despite how unpolished some of the mechanics are. But because DeS is more "broken" I find there are way more fun, unique builds. Like you can do meme regen builds, fire magic, soul magic, melee magic, miracles, DBS, cleaver, sword and board, scraping spear, sudoku katana, etc. Etc.

The atmosphere is also a lot bleaker and creepier imo; you're being held in the nexus against your will for what could be forever, and I like that its the pursuit of souls in itself that causes corruption. Dark Souls barely even focuses on souls, its all about fire and humanity.

Around half and half of that doesn't even move like human, such as Dancer. If you wanna go that far and say that Dancer counts as DUDE IN ARMOR then we gotta increase the number in DS2 by 3 or so.

Being able to infuse and buff literally everything is one of the few things DS2 got right and I was incredibly disappointed they got rid of it in DS3

I tried to make a dark sorcerer in DS3 but dark magic is just so pitifully underpowered (weaker than pure magic despite the heavier investment required) that it just felt worthless. Also there's a lack of decent dark catalysts.

OP's pic has the guard in an arc pointing upwards, if a sword slides down the blade and reach the crossguard, it will slide along the curvature and hit the person wielding the BKG in the arms. Guards are there to stop other blades from doing this.
