I think it's one of those correlation not causation things. The way media and marketing have gone to great lengths to make gaming more accessible to everyone hides the fact that it was and still is a past time that was..."championed" by primarily solitary individuals. For a number of reasons and varying degrees of mental illness being one of them people that felt they didn't get along with people socially could participate in an engaging time consuming activity.
