I remember tuning into Punk's Samsho stream and he didn't make it past the tutorial before claiming to be bored and done with it. Aris seemed to like it a little more but refused to take it seriously as a game.

Aris ended the stream stating that there is a possibility he'll look into what how TamTam players actually play, but probably not. For those versed in Aris' lingo, that means he's interested in the game but since it's not Tekken he'll take it easy. Only time will tell if he'll actually support it to some extent.

I tuned into a few different streams and maybe it was too early, but hardly anyone streaming utilized most of the mechanics or just flailed.

I'm having a lot of fun, but haven't quite found the character for me yet

It is more that you get the game has a lot going on under the surface. What seems like they would be simple mechanics have weird properties and interactions you have to keep track of. A lot of the things you can do in the game would feel more at home in an anime get, yet here they are in a grounded footsie based game and it all makes sense. On defence alone you have a lot of choices and it is figuring out each scenario and what is best where you find the depth. While that exists in most games, you can kind of auto-pilot more cause it is unlike that your 2H is going to be negative on hit or that your combo will be bursted for 75%

Granblue's beta was kind of boring though.

I like Yashamaru, but I was really put off by him only having three special moves. I may still try and learn him though.

I can't help but feel like he is missing a tool. You have to take a lot of risks if your opponent isn't dumb, and without rage he is much less of a character.

I believe the Japanese PSN should still have the offline demo up. No need to have PS+ like the last demo and there's no timer. You'll have to make a JPN PSID, but that's pretty quick with tutorials online.

The demo has local versus human/cpu/tutorial and training. Charlotte, Ukyo and Genjuro are the characters available to try as well.

For a weapons based fighter, why is nearly everyone's attack range so comically short?

SamSho is as simple as it gets man, there's like no execution barrier, so you'd just need to learn the unique mechanics like dodge and disarm. There's not a single fighting game out there that's as easy to get into as this.

The game still plays great at low levels, especially for characters like Darli/Genjuro who can end a match off of three to four good heavy slashes. Yoshitora may be a bit too much at least initially since you have to learn how to use all the swords, when you can actually land them, and then finally end the occasional match nuking the world with the seventh.

I just finished Story with Haohmaru, breezed through it until I got to Genjuro and he cost me a few continues, then Shizuka got me twice but for the most part my SamSho II (360 arcade) experience carried me. Am I ready for online or should I run a few more stories just to learn the roster/a new main? Mind you I mostly play Haohmaru because I like learning the vanilla guy first.

You won't learn to properly play (using defensive mechanics and such) unless you take your shit online. Learn some punishes and combos in training mode (I believe Haoh's bread and butter punishes are 5M into DP and heavy slash, plus supers) and take that shit online to try and feel how the game plays against another human.

Is the quick draw sword+sheath style actually a thing?

Kyoshiro isn't strong, but I think he can work. Everything he does feels a bit too slow and not damaging enough for that, but it still forms a functional gameplan.

blade catch is just parry but unarmed, honestly you should probably at least try to get used to how actual people play as just playing against ai will build bad habits

There are quite a lot of low level players on right now, so it is the best time to jump in. Just accept that you will probably lose for a bit.

It's too early for tiers and even then tiers are mostly meme and samsho games were never too unbalanced with the roster

ai will let you get away with shit you really shouldn't at times, playing on harder difficulties isn't exactly good for learning either because the ai will just read your inputs and react accordingly

AI won't anti air you as often and consistently as a decent player, and will let lots of unsafe shit goes unpunished, for example. I remember in online SFIV, whenever I fought a low ranked player, they'd keep jumping at me and eat around 5 anti airs before realizing it was not a good idea, and after that they wouldn't know what to do since that's how they won against the AI all the time.

Granblue does have pretty simple combos, the most you could do in the beta was auto/chain combo into ex to bounce them off the wall then hit them after.
Personally I like these types of games with heavy emphasis on neutral but I don't like Samsho's graphics, looks ugly to me whereas Granblue is an arcsys game so it's stylish as hell.
I'll probably get Samsho when it's on sale in the future, maybe, but I'm waiting for Granblue.

Week 1 whining is always pretty irrelevant to how a game does. I mean think of Under Night, you wouldn't catch any of the big FGC names dead with that game. If samsho doesn't do much, but then in a year has a good few tournament suddenly everyone will love it.

Approaching a multiplayer game with this AAA mentality of it is either alive and loved in the first place or irrelevant for every is the wrong way to go. I feel like people who shittalks about SamSho's mechanics are way too spoiled by shitty modern FG standards nowadays. SamSho is FUN and it's balanced enough that any of the cast can win with good reads and luck. It's just like real life.

Just play it safe and cool. The game really does reward basic fundamentals.

Not saying you do this, but I think a lot of people focus on that is the big damage, I need those big hits, oh throws can do that, oh heavies do that so I'll do those. Not really getting that I can just LS/MS poke you to death for trying. People like James Chen have pointed out throws are strong, he is right but that is cause you actually need to get up to someone and do it when they have so many ways to deal with offence. So many players at the end of the round start throwing heavies, it might work 1/5 matches but a good player will just start taking the free damage. You want to eventually try to set up those things and look for the openings, but basing your gameplan around them will just result in frustration.

You really want to plan carefully when you over stretch in this game. You have so many options in a given situation, that usually follow a pretty obvious tier of risky to safe. But some characters will mix that up. So you start with a basic poke game and fill in the blanks of oh this is more punishable, just defend is more rewarded here, this character can deal with certain things in the match up or it is easier to get a set up if this happens. This all works cause characters have strong tools, unlike a lot of simple games where they just have basic stuff. SamSho has a lot of mechanics even if they are easy to use, so it is figuring out how restrained you need to be and where if you need to you can start pushing your luck.

Yeah, it isn't great, it doesn't go into the full depth of everything but it goes through what is in the game. Only thing I think it misses is recoil and whiff cancel. If you hit someone and get a recoil animation you can cancel into deflect or special. Same with some buttons on whiff

Bros, wtf am I supposed to do when I get disarmed, I've been able to come back from getting disarmed but only when the opponent is so low on health that I only need a kick or two to finish them off, but if the opponent is healthy I've never been able to avoid getting absolutely wrecked. If I go for my weapon the opponent just fucking blasts me with a heavy when I pick it up, if I go for the fight I only have like two or three ways to approach and get predicted.
Don't even get me started when the weapon falls away from the screen and the opponent chooses to cuck me by standing on the edge and making it literally impossible for me to get to my weapon.

Its a very different style of fighting game. Hardly any emphasis on combos and supers, more emphasis on solid neutral play, defensive control, and punishing mistakes. A good counter will kill half your life if you mess up bad. If you're crazy about air-dashing and mahvel style combos, probably not your style. But if what i described sounds interesting, look into it and try it out.
