At the time Smash 4 was being developed Kid Icarus Uprising has appeared to not only have revived Kid Icarus, but positioned it as a strong brand going forward. Uprising was one of, if not the best 3DS game, and was incredibly popular so it made sense it would get favorable treatment in Smash. No one could have known that the IP would die again.

64 is the starting roster, no one there was unhype. You can't count it in.
Melee was the first sequel and it came shortly after 64 and everyone there was a surprise, I don't remember anyone caring about newcomers there because the concept was still too new, we just got the first game and now we had the first sequel and it was the first time we had gotten new characters. So again, you can't really count melee newcomers here.
The real newcomer hype only began with Brawl because now we knew what to expect, the franchise was already big and the updates made it very hype.
Every Brawl newcomer was hype. Every single one. We got big names that were long overdue, fanservice, old characters reimagined, and even out of nowhere suprises like Sonic or Snake.
So that leads us to WiiU. And we have to count the DLC as part of the game because it is part of the game. And out of all the WiiU characters one stands out the most:
Corrin
No one knew about them, no one cared about them and no one wanted them.
Yet here they are as DLC out of nowhere for no god damn reason other than to market the game to the japanese audience.
They are objectively the least hype character ever introduced to the game.
Second would be Bayonetta for pretty much the same reasons. Another character nobody wanted and nobody cared about who got in to market yet another game Nintendo was publishing and took a valuable third party position that could have gone to someone that mattered to the Nintendo audience.
Besides those two theres no one I can think of as being "unhype".
They are all either big third parties, old classic characters that deserve a spot or new characters that already solidified their place in Nintendo history like Inkling.

Dr. Mario, Pichu, Mewtwo, Roy, and Young Link were all missing on Brawl after being introduced in Melee.
They were also missing in smash 4 along with Lucas and Wolf and Pokemon trainer.

Even if you liked Uprising having Palutena as the public E3 reveal and showing fucking Pac-Man behind closed doors was legitimate retardation.

Hyped new dlc character reveal starts with a hype trailer, everyone wondering who it was.
Then massive disappointment when she shows up. Most players didn't even know who the fuck it was.It turns out to be the protagonist of some random third party action game that nintendo was porting to the WiiU to help with the system's game drought and they wanted to market her, so same situation as Corrin but this one gets much worse.
It's soon evident how shamelessly rushed the character was with broken mechanics that literally killed the competitive scene and made twitch viewership drop from 10k to 2k in just 6 months of being out. This all lled to some of the most embarrassing moments the community has ever dealt with including but not limited to entire audiences walking out of finals, top players stalling matches out of spite towards the viewers and talks of banning her divided the scene.

From there it's a little bit muddier. I guess it's easy to pick on a character like Young Link for being a bit lame but that's still just a clone. While I'm a huge fan of Uprising I can totally see why someone would find Palutena a really weak addition only here because of Sakurai's personal preferences. Zero Suit will remain one of the strangest additions in Smash's history, just Samus from that brief epilogue in Zero Mission. Then there's Incineroar, a divisive design from a mediocre game indicative of the Pokémon franchise's decline, but at least they did a good job on its moveset. I guess Greninja gets a pass because the design was immediately popular.

No brainer but Nintendo needed to spend more resources on the 100 giant stages backgrounds because Sakurai cannot be satisfied unless every detail in the startfox stage looks just right.
That and all the DLC characters who clearly have ten times as much budget poured to them as any regular character.

Melee and Brawl TOs frequently banned absurd unfair bullshit yet WiiU Bayo was given a total pass, and complaints were always dismissed with snotty "le epic salt xd lern 2 adapt" remarks.

Also I forgot about what a horrid shitshow EVO 2018 was. Because of Bayo, the game couldn't even have a remotely dignified send off for its final year of real relevancy. Christ, MELEE got the plug for the August Direct instead of WiiU.

For me, its a tie between Incineroar and Isabelle.

Daisy was at least an unexpected surprise and Dark Samus has a lot of fans. No one was surprised by Chrom getting in after teasing him in Smash 4.

The game was incredibly fun, and surprisingly deep. Proper twin stick support would only make it better. Half rail shooter, half character action with a fantastic design? Sounds amazing to me. Even the voice acting was good. The only real issue is that they just didn't make another for no obvious reason. The only one I would accept is to make another Air Ride.

Snake's inclusion, for example, came out of left field and was awesome. Mega Man hasn't been relevant for a decade, but his inclusion was hype as shit. I feel like the only person who was legitimately excited by Incineroar. I didn't believe Grinch (thought it could be legit, but I refuse to take any form of leak as absolute no matter what) so was neutral and didn't feel like we got him "instead".

I also really enjoyed Gen 7 and Alola as a region was extremely fun for me. I'm happy those games get a representation, and one that is so full of personality. If anything, I'm almost a little sad we didn't get an Alola stage along with him. Altar of the Sunne/Moone with a transition that goes into the Ultra Space Wormhole would be awesome.

Pokemon has 800+ creatures, the ones that are chosen for Smash are obviously going to be only the recognisable ones, and that means either marketing ones (Lucario), starters (Incineroar) or legendaries (Mewtwo). I'd love a fucking crazy pick that isn't any of those too, but it isn't going to happen for obvious reasons.

If anything, I appreciate Pokemon gets such special treatment by basically being their entire own set of Assist Trophies. That's the most logical and best way to have the quirky and unique species like Pyukumuku shine.

Damn near all of Smash Four's newcomers. Pac-Man and Greninja were the only ones I liked and Duck Hunt got leaked so the surprise was gone. Shulk I had some respect for given that I did play his game beforehand and Little Mac, I thought was going to be Dixie given how Smash Four was focused on promoting recent titles and relevancy. Nothing against Mac but that was when I knew Smash Four was gonna let me down. Dark Pit was so awful, he didn't even get a title card. The people who did the trailer knew people were going to be mad if they tried to showcase a literal clone. Even Lucina got some spotlight, going back to KI's overrepresentation.

Well, FE characters are pretty easy to pick up top tiers from my experience.
People who generally don't give a fuck about Nintendo characters, or are obsessed about tiers, tend to play them.

I think Chrom gets a bit of leniency from some people for being a low effort clone that didn't cost extra. Corrin was watered down branding that Nintendo and IS expected people to pay extra for.

People forget that Palutena got into Nintendo's E3 with a boring announcement when literally later that day they announced fucking PAC-MAN behind closed doors for reporters. They went and made an original animated teaser for a relatively useless side character from one of the lesser Nintendo franchises but then we found out about Pac-man through a goddamn tweet. Incineroar was stuck in a bad Nintendo Direct, which didn't help it either. Corrin was announced along side Bayonetta so it didn't really matter.

She was NEVER a Villager echo. Her proportions were too different, as stated by Sakurai himself.
Also, she was buggy because they didn't properly test the interactions with other objects, not her moveset itself. I mean how do you account for two Isabelle fighting each other, one picks up the assist trophy with fishing rod, then the other ALSO tries to take it with the rod at a specific point in the animation.
