Yeah, but this is before other people start making their amazing levels, and before people start playing with other people online, and before the inevitable DLC packs that will make the game even better, just like checkpoints, keys/key coins, and other objects did. It's one of those very few games that gets better because of what the community puts into it.

Mario Kart works because it continues to improve on a solid base. MK8 in particular, shit's got 48 tracks. Mario Party's newest game was a letdown since it got back to basics, but for what it is it feels like half a game. I'll give you Tennis, there's not much you can do with it, so it's boring. Odyssey has a fantastic base to work with, but it's not quite as developed as it could have been. Here's hoping an Odyssey 2 fully realizes the potential, like SMG 2 did.

A story mode where Mario finds out he has a daughter and his characterization transitions from happy wahoo adventure man to gruff and generically troubled antihero, where there are platforming segments where he has to create structures so his daughter can climb past trivial obstacles, and all the while there are segments where they do nothing but walk while the daughter chatters inanely?

As long it does its job, has more meaningful features(basically the whole addition of 3D World and its new mechanics, and the multiplayer and the more refined tagging/searching system), it's basically everything you could ask from Super Mario Maker 2.
