It's a webcomic that utilizes basically every aspect of the internet to form a very unique storytelling medium which is pretty much unheard of. It uses everything from still images, to GIFs, to flash animation, to music, linking to other websites, etc.
As for what the grey skinned people are, they're basically just a variant of humans called trolls.

Its a big multimedia webcomic with the occasional flash. The flashes are just glorified AMVs but they're hype.

The comic presents itself as a step by step text adventure game with user commands. For the first part of the comic, the user commands were submitted by actual users! Its got some neat art but it takes a nosedive near the end of the comic, as does the rest of the fucking comic.

Also the gray skined horned dudes are "trolls". They're just gray humans but they're major assholes.

They're aliens from another universe. The protagonists played a much-anticipated AR/VR game one day, which turned out to be an ancient sacred method of universal reproduction, sending them into a higher plane of existence to create a new universe while destroying their home planet so they can't go back.

They're contacted through the void by this group of alien kids, who also played the same game on their world in their universe, which was also destroyed, and they created a new universe, but due to unforeseen circumstances were barred from entering it. They wrongly blamed the humans, and both groups had to work together to solve the mystery and find an escape among the various planes of reality.

No. Early homestuck is pretty based and has good humor.

During Act 6 people fucked up bad and Terezi gave John a list of instructions on how to repair the timeline, which half ended up being pranks to fuck with him. As a result, John got a frustrated crush on her, and her new self on him for fucking with her in such an intimate way, but neither wanted to admit it, but it was obvious.

At the end Vriska went off to go fight some monster in some hellhole somewhere. Terezi departed to go retrieve Vriska from said hellhole, while John remained behind on Earth in victory after beating the game. Seven years passed for John, an indeterminate amount of years passed for Terezi. John has become jaded with the boring dullness of his earned epilogue, and is given a quest by Rose to go back and kill the monster, because Vriska fucked up and failed and didn't kill it and died. So John departed, killed the monster, and suffered mortal wounds in the battle. At the same time Terezi caught up to where Vriska was (finding him instead), they had a major heart to heart and revealed all their secrets since she's dying of hunger too, she patched up his wounds, and they had sex. Neither one makes indication that they wanted it to be just a one-night stand, but John dies taking her back to Earth via his powers, leaving the rest to her. She decides he's worth far more than a potential peaceful life she could have here and departs again to search for a way to revive him.

It's honestly the best part of the epilogue and you'll find lots of people praising that part, if anything in it.

2bh playing Hiveswap and Friendsim back to back reminded me of exactly how sterile and sanded-down Homestuck became. Hiveswap is fine but goddamn if it doesn't lack a fucking spine.

Terezi did get John killed that one time and they legitimately have good chemistry as a couple, their personalities mesh surprisingly well.

I haven’t written any fanfics before, though I did get involved with an ERP with a Vriska player once that involved her and the character I was playing growing giant while they fucked.

God this just suddenly reminded me. I used to read this HS fic called Herding Cats, basically the story was that Nepeta was tasked with pairing all the trolls together in working relationships, maxing out all their relationship options during Hivebent for a chance to turn their doomed timeline into an alternate timeline. It was fucking long as shit but the author actually knew the characters pretty well and wrote some great dialogue. It was basically better than Homestuck itself. Then, they just decided not to write the final chapter. Like, it basically ended, but it didn't have that final "closing action" chapter to wrap everything up in a nice bow, they were just content with letting it sit there unfinished for a long time. Maybe they finished it, but by that point I had lost interest and moved on. Anyway, if any of you are still Homestuckfags, maybe go check that one out. I remember it being pretty good. I haven't read it at all in like, 5 years though, so who knows if it still holds up. I just remember them doing some pretty out-there ships but making them feel absolutely logical and reasonable by the time the fic made them official, which is impressive.
