>Mobs dropping on you to attack you out of nowhere after walking in absolute empty caves (my true worst)

Combine that with how fragile you are early on it's super easy to get gibbed out of the blue if you aren't aware of how enemy spawns work.
Turning around to find a Creeper right up in your face is unironically one of the most startling things in video games.

You can tell if a zombie's dead or not because they'll have bite marks on their bodies if you leave the area and come back again.

Silent Hill 4 made me uncomfortable and gave me a kind of fevery feeling. It didn’t necessarily “scare” me in any deep way, but man it got me surreal.

The horror of minecraft works like a condiment. After you get invested in the core gameplay of building, exploring and ambience you get invested in your progress. Scary noises, and actual threats to that are a lot more potent then some horror game where you know what you are getting

the game plays a lot with your expectations and relies heavily on sound, timing and atmosphere. no cheap screamers too bar a few jumpscares. absolute 10/10
