It ends up being bad. It works in a way that reminds me of God Hand where you customize your moves for each button and some button cobinations. Each time you do a certain match-up of moves and uses them you can get a NEW move that would combine two of them, say you have a kick and a spin for a dodge on the same set, use them enough and eventually you get a spin-kick. There is something like 100 moves IIRC but a lot are useless and some are clear winners.
Movement is iffy as you move in bursts that really hurts positioning when it seems they thought of making positioning an important part during the game's development so despite being entirely 2D it feels floaty.
You can have a fuckton of party memebrs at any time in the story and bring them to a fuckload of zones and have crazy parties or invite two unfriendly NPCs and the party splits and you haev to do a story event before they wand to band together with you again.
You can MAKE a party member with the golem system but items and information are so hard to find that by the end of the game you just kinda don't.
I don't remember too much either way, its been YEARS. Its a great thing to play if you got nothing else to sate a hunger for good ass sprites and crazy Square Soft designs, and some fresh-ass soundtrack
