Fallout 3 is less than 4 bucks on Steam, but the GOTY edition is 10. If I just want to experience the game, is the former version adequate? Or is the DLC worth it?

The DLC is not worth it. And I think FO3 has some problems running on newer OS + hardware builds.

thanks. i guess ill plunk down 3.50 and see if it can work

It's worthless without the DLC because almost every modern mod depends on their assets. Pitt is also much better than the base game.

If you want to make that game playable in any form you should get the FO3 GOTY as well as FNV Ultimate in order to run it through the Tale of Two Wastelands mod because it will fix the game.

Fallout 3 is one of the shoddiest pieces of software ever made. It is barely compatible with modern operating systems and CPUs. It was fine in 2008 when it was running on Windows Vista, but you are in for a ride if you try to run it on 7, 8 or 10 - even if you fix it, the game will be heavily unstable.

Also, Mothership Zeta is a trash dlc.

isnt this game still fucked on every version of windows besides XP or some shit

thanks man. it feels pretty crappy id have to put down an extra few bucks just to play the base game on modern PC. not sure if i'm going to do it

>Tale of Two Wastelands
Fuck off, literally just get K-Lite codec and some user patches from the nexus and the game is fixed.

Honestly, if you really want to play it in its vanilla state only, the easiest option you have is probably the 360 version, unless you have windows Vista.
The game is better modded imo, time has not been kind to it.

It's not worth spending that much money on the GOTY on steam imo. Funny this thread came up, because I was planning to play through Fallout 3 today, but after reinstalling and spending 35 mins on fixing my files, it would take hours of .ini file edits and modding that it really isn't wasn't worth it in the end.

If you are that bothered just watch a playthrough.

Just pirate the DLCs, they work just like mods and don't get detected

>it doesn't work on Windows 7/10 meme
it's literally just GFWL and multicore compatibility issues

here's a minimalist guide on how to fix these:
steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1586739526

but yeah, you can also mod the shit out of it if you want

i pirated the gog version of fallout 3 goty, running it with fallout 3 tick fix, the 4gb patch (i know it's included but i wanted to make sure) and darnified ui on windows 10, it works well
from what i've read the gog version has some slight modifications that are supposed to make it run better than the steam version, but i wouldn't know
either way, it's definitely possible to play this game on modern hardware

just play new vegas to be honest friend, it's one of if not the best wrpg of all time

The biggest issue brailnets run in with the Steam version is GFWL. It literally won't run if you don't have GFWL installed. But Windows 10 fucking knows this and suggests you install GFWL, it literally gives you a link in a notification if it detects Fallout 3 on your HDD.

And then there are common crashes because the game is not set to work with multicore CPU's, which can be fixed with a single INI edit.

See the guide

Pirate it and use the $4 dollars to feed yourself

You need all the DLC for 3, NV, and 4 because the unofficial bugfix patches require them, and those patches are fucking massive improvements.

Also the original ending was designed to bait everyone into buying the Real Ending(tm) DLC, so look forward to that.

New Vegas is literally the same game though. But it's made by Obsidian so the zoomer hipsters wrongly think it's better somehow. Which is false, it's literally Fallout 3 but with ironsights lmao.

Wrong.

>ctrl+F "what do they eat"
>Phrase not found

What do they eat

why does steam sell games if they can't even work properly? that seems pretty shoddy

I pirated it. It's shite without a filter remover and a greenery mod. Had to completely overhaul Rivet City, too.

Just be careful using the prostitution mod to get the Tenpenny apartment if you spare Megaton; the game HATES that.

Tbf Broken Steel is just a post-game dungeon. Not that great. I legitimately didn't bother with it on last replay of the game. It's just a massive area with tanky enemies, super tedious unless you cheese it with stealth.

Just want to pop in and say that Fallout 3 is peak comfy.

If you want your level cap to be 20 then buy vanilla.
I know it was just so that Bethesda could later push Broken Steel and broken enemies but it's fucking criminal you can't even play the entire game without hitting that cap

>checked /vg/ for the first time today
>saw they had a Fallout general called /fog/
>decided to check it out
>its filled with Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 fanboys

Is this why Yea Forums only has people hating on these two games? Because everyone who liked them moved to /fog/?

The Pitt is 3 fucking missions long. If you want to play The Pitt, play New Vegas

Most of /fog/ hasn't played NV, 3 or the OG Fallouts, they started with 4.

They do not know what a good game is - they are contained in that shitheap of a general with Caitfag to keep them company. Good riddance.

/fog/ is just waifu and ENB posting
Fucking disgusting

It saddens the utter fuck out of me that newfags start with fallout 4, they prefer the method of “collect trash - upgrade guns with trash - use to collect more trash”. They even implemented this formula in their Fallout shelter app so now lunch (loot) boxes are filled with rare trash

Wow, what a great rebuttal. I'm sure you shilling a shit mod has nothing to do with what you think makes the game stable.

Wrong

Not only is it better optimized for modern systems, the game has so many immersive ways to roleplay you can replay it for a long time with all the varied builds you could make. the characters are memorable and likeable, can you seriously tell me you've never quoted a new vegas character having played it? and the quests were pretty clever (the detective-like quests come to mind, those were the best part of the game), and the landmarks and locations in the map were pretty cool to explore. (So many vaults, factories and towns, the strip in general was pretty cool in general with all the casinos).
Fallout 3 was a shoddily-made game that featured elements from Fallout 1&2 just because people recognized them and had outdated and janky mechanics.
Obsidian managed within a year to salvage Bethesda's trash heap of a game and made it into something great. Eat a dick.

I'm making a unique weapon varient mod that gives you some unique variants to save your money for. Any ideas for variants you want to see?

For example a semi auto infiltrator rifle with better damage and crit chance

Scavenging is only natural in the post-apocolypse It makes-fuck-all sense in a Fallout 3, NV, or 4 setting because that shit 200 years ago and everything should have already been scavenged. These aren't frontier settings like 1 and 2.

buy it for cheap if you like, pirate the DLCs, there are no checks in the launcher to make sure you legally acquired the add-on files
it hardly runs on win7/win10 as stated multiple times in this thread
if you've already played NV it might feel a bit dated and a bit of a step back, but if you haven't played NV then have fun!

That place is full of shills and retarded tripfags. They were defending the 76 battle Royale iirc.

You gonna do unique models? or just stats?
Either way a version of the Chinese pistol worth carrying would be neat. Stock would be nice on it if the answer to the question was yes.

Ignore Bethesdrones and Obsidiots, if you want to play a good fallout game play 1 or 2. Only zoomers who like to larp as boomers like NV, and only casual normalfags like 3 and 4.

Its sad that they forget the setting is post-post-apocalypse.

Ballistic knives and rifles with pistol holsters in the stock.

Maybe a lazer weapon with crazy low damage but insane crit damage.

I don't understand why people compare 3 and NV as they are two sides of them same coin. It's better if you treat them as duology as each one does something better than the other.
I personally find 3 is better for muh atmosphere as it has a better world to explore and random encounters.
The short comings of 3 is obviously it's story and content (not enough quests / weapons / enemies).
NV is the opposite. Goodsprings - Primm - Outpost - Nipton - Novac - Boulder - Freeside - Strip is what 90% of players will experience. But of course the game picks up with it's writing and politics that make it a better story than 3.

Either way, it's a shame the franchise has gone down the shitter and I doubt there will be another good fallout game with Bethesda behind the reins

Attached: Flagnarmor.gif (640x489, 180K)

you can pirate the dlc and even get dlc achievments

I'd love to mod out all the random fucking pre-war foods in my current NV playthrough, but the NV modding community is barely acceptable.

>make it a better story than 3.
Thats not exactly saying much user.

Unique stats and textures

I don't think there will ever be another good game at all that is being developed by Bethesda.

I've noticed that they try to take care of TES more than Fallout, just look at the scale of FO4 to Skyrim and FO3 to Oblivion, but the fact that they are continuing to use gamebryo and after seeing what they have been releasing as of late I believe that Starfield and TESVI will be even worse than you think. They'll sell loads though.

Well they sure as fuck weren't going to use elder scrolls to make a rust clone. Fallout is the abused adopted kid.

Yeah.
It still pisses me off how little content there is for the Encalve, especially when they are the game's fucking antagonist.
The inclusion of the Outcasts are pretty cool and interesting, but the most we get is "go collect scrap n shit"

Yeah, they just use it to sell Vault boy and Nuka cola merch and the MrMattyPlays-esque fan base eats it all up.

What the fuck are you shits talking about? I have run both F3 and NV on windows 7 with multiple installations and mod setups and both have always worked perfectly. You have to have some virus ridden half fried shit box running on nigerian drivers to not be able to play these on w7.

It's easy to find a way to cut through the mountains from Goodsprings to the 188.and somebody could easily learn Benny is from New Vegas and decide to do so. And it's not like it would take a genius to go "These deathclaws are deadly, I'll go east"and make their way to NCRCF as that would be the eastern-most map marker they have by that point. "Coincidentally", there's a safe route practically outlined for anyone that actually bothers to try this. Learned this on my second character.

This shit wouldnt run on windows 8.1 or 10. Dont buy it

The DLC is actually the best part of the game.

The Pitt is a masterpiece, and Point Lookout is what Far Harbor wished it could be. Operation Anchorage is actually pretty good too, and Broken Steel is a nice addendum to the main story. Mothership Zeta is shit, but 4/5 aint bad.

It's like the opposite of New Vegas, where the base game is amazing but the DLC is mediocre.

Yup, it's unplayable for me, crashes every 5 min and after a lot tinkering i managed to make it crash every 15 instead

NO FALLOUT 3 IS THE WORST FALLOUT

Fallout 4 was good, story was shit but it was a good game.
