Is a whip really a viable weapon compared to a sword/axe/lance/mace? Would a whip made of a chain even work?

Range and ease of use wins fights. There's a reason spears and two handed swords replaced short swords, and guns eventually replaced melee weapons. A whip is a long range weapon, yes, but it's also an incredibly technical one. We can assume because the Belmonts have a magic whip they train for it, but in general no, other weapons are better.

So basically a morning star or kusari gama?

No. Anyone with any bit of armor will laugh at you before gutting you.

Castlevania works because it's a holy whip and to unholy monsters it functions like a monofilament whip.

a modified whip that's actually usable as a weapon is a flail.

I actually think bullships would be a more practical weapon than long chain flails, its seems easier to control and won't hurt yourself.

>Would a whip made of a chain even work?

It would literally tear CHUNKS of flesh out of a person. There are youtube videos demonstrating how dangerous a chain whip would be.
