The creator kept adding new stuff, keeping interest alive. Spawned numerous, similar fangames.

imo, it's probably designed to be intentionally ambiguous. Because that's what dreams often feel like.

I think much of the product isn't some secret meaning, it is specifically the "what could it mean?" experience and the "something is not quite right here..." atmosphere.

There are definitely small bits here and there that seem to give partial windows into Mado's mind and her concerns though.

Like being chased by the Toriningen in one part of the game but in another, the environment physically prevents you from joining Toriningens having a party. Speaks of simultaneous social anxiety and loneliness.

Or how there are certain NPCs you can sort of talk to, but not Poniko. Poniko appearance and her room are sort of parallel in design to Mado's, but nicer. You can't interact with the one other "normal" girl, who seems to have it nicer than you.

Inspired by these posts. Here is how to keep your own dream journal.
Firstly, you need to dream. Which is hard to force, really. You need REM sleep, specifically. And most people don't sleep properly, so there isn't much of that to go around.
One method, however, is to wake up and go right back to sleep. Or, wait half an hour. An hour? Something like that.
Secondly, you need to train your brain to retain information from these dreams. Because it's typically a mish mash of fucking nonsense that's simply akin to your brain going autism trying to sort everything. So when you wake up, it doesn't take long for it to go into the dumpster. Which is why dream journals exist.
Most people have phones, or computers- Hell, just get plain stationary and a pencil. Keep it close. And fucking LEAP at it whenever your brain goes autism. The act of writing it down will slowly turn into the habit of memorizing these dreams, and you'll be able to retain more and more of them as you go on, meaning you'll also dream more.

I played (And Beat) This game a few weeks ago and honestly... It's a bit overrated. A lot of "scenery" is just "pitch black void with a few ____ scattered here and there", I have to scroll down and select the bicycle each time I want to use it, super tedious. Doors aren't marked, I want to go to a certain world but I have to keep entering and exiting worlds over and over to get to the world I need. Music loops are cool, but too short, often 15 seconds at most. That dumb egg mechanic where you have to equip each effect one by one by one, and then eject each effect one... by one... by one... to see the ending.
The parts where you actually get to explore stuff is great, like the pink sea, the sky garden, that one rooftop with the witch flying, etc.
But there was also a lot of things holding this game back that prevent me from calling it "Great", I guess.

I had two awesome dreams in the past two days

The first one took place in a video game store, I was participating on this minigame about wrapping up candy with my friends while some asshole teddy bears tried to unpack them, thankfully one of my friends was a madman and wrapped them up really quickly. Them the second part of the dream was a trail through a foggy bamboo maze, we had to follow faceless, distorted women in kimonos through the maze, them go through jumping pads to reach a circus that is on the other side of a cliff. Them the final level, a twisted carnival filled with cowboy themed imagery of Tom and Jerry who would shoot you in intervals, after climbing to the top of this big ass level you would reach a 2D area where you fight an angelical looking Felix the cat knockoff who can OHKO you with thunders. After beating the game I found myself back in the story, looking at a shelf filled with Wii games (one of them being a copy of smash with Shadow the Hedgehog on the cover), I think about renting some games to pirate them before finally waking up

The second dream was Resident Evil themed. I wasn't there but spectating a group of survivors running through a never ending hospital corridor as a zombie crowd chased them. The dream took turns with explaining the backstories of each one of them, one of the survivors mentions how the red cross at the top of the building is where the leader of the zombies lives, they keep running as the corridor keeps getting less and less wide, until the final door is there and they escape. The dream ends with a rainy, dark street and a realistic as fuck scream happens by the left (offscreen), I wake up thinking it is happening IRL.

Yume Nikki is a very dreamlike experience. A lot of what you see and what Mado feels is up to interpretation. Like the designs of the Toriningen or other creatures that were only rendered within 32 pixel high sprites.

Dream Dairies is a lot bigger on pushing a particular narrative. The fan sequel chooses to illustrate a lot of things that the original game purposefully left for the player's imagination. In Dream Diaries, Mado shows more negative emotion and the environment is portrayed as more sinister and predatory. In the original those things could be disturbingly ambiguous.

Among other things, this is why people hate on the second game. It may be decent on its own but it does not have the same mysterious dreamlike atmosphere of the first.
