I remember makai kingdom technically being my gateway into all this years before I even knew what a disgaea was, but I haven't played it in forever, does it hold up?

probably not if you've played more modern games because of all the QoL changes
I still like it because of the mobile spawn point, buildings and vehicles, plus the random map extensions
I'm still waiting for it to some out on PC with the PSP extras

I still think it holds up, the base formula of what makes Disgaea games good was present. Interesting stat stuff, cool characters, interesting plot points, some puzzling strategies at times.
Most of the old ones still hold up, Phantom Brave and La Pucelle are also still good.
