It got shittier with every update, they stopped caring about sex appeal, and they started randomly banning everyone. It was fun with friends but otherwise you'll get raped in comp, because the game intentionally puts you with shitty teammates if you're doing too well

It was a train that went nowhere. The meta to competitive play was always a worrying topic even at the start. A team could pick multiple copies of a hero, so if you wanted a team of all Tracers that was an option. Their first "official" tourney was an embarrassment because both teams ran the exact same setup against each other at the exact same time. After that it was just bad choice after bad patch. Then once the game is "fixed" they decide that the community needs a stern talking to despite the best racism I've ever heard coming from WoW. That's dead though, this is the new hotness and where they get to signal for good goy points, so they do it and everyone gets mad. Also the lore is deader than dead because everyone has to be gay now except they're nothing beyond that superficial label. They haven't written anything really substantial because if they had and they got it wrong the shitstorm would be immediate.

These are just surface thoughts, I keep coming up with more but that ends up making this post a fucking book and I already put way too much actual thought into this. Blizzard assassinated their own game and they know it. That's the weirdest part, someone at the company had to have done a big picture meeting and just looked at their results since launch. It had to be uncomfortable, can't walk any of it back though.

don't also forget that they made a game specifically for casuals, by making no competitive options at all, like FoV, and grounded the mechanics in "everybody gets to be awesome" by making people shoot eachother for 3 minutes then press Q to feel amazing with insta-wipe-easily-to-moderately avoidable abilities that are telegraphed to fuck, on maps that are basically all double funnels.
And then they said, "this game is comp as fuck, let'ss make a tv league out of it" and it's all unwatchable becausse the meta is stale as fuck, you can't see shit through all the effects and map elements, and you can't see shit in first person because the fov is like 65 and the players are jerking the cameras like their own dicks.
